Early Life:
Derek Steven Hagan was born on September 21, 1984 in Northridge, California. As a young kid, Hagan was involved in sports, and that continued into high school. Hagan was a 2002 graduate of Palmdale (California) High School. He earned honorable-mention all-region honors by PrepStar Magazine, and was listed as the No. 65 player in the Farwest by PrepStar. Hagan was also ranked as the No. 113 player in the Farwest by SuperPrep, as he earned all-city honors his senior season. Derek earned all-conference honors his junior and senior seasons. Hagan had a great senior season, as he caught 65 passes for 843 yards and five touchdowns, and his 843 yards set a school record. Hagan also added nine interceptions on defense. Hagan made the All-Valley Press team as a senior, and he caught 19 passes for 303 yards on offense and had 23 tackles and four interceptions on defense as a junior. Hagan also earned first-team All-Golden League accolades as a junior and senior, and was the team MVP as a junior and a senior. In addition to playing football, Hagan also triple jumped 46 feet and averaged 12 points and five rebounds in basketball. Hagan was a team captain in three sports his senior year (football, basketball & track).
Arizona State Sun Devils-2002-Freshman Year:
Hagan played in all 14 games in 2002, and started starting three. Hagan broke the ASU freshman record for receptions with 32, a mark previously held by College Football Hall of Famer John Jefferson (the record has since been broken by Zach Miller). Derek trailed Jefferson (and now Miller) with 405 yards. He had a reception in every game but two, and finished the year third on the team in receptions with 32. Hagan gained 405 receiving yards for an average of 12.7 yards per catch.. Hagan had a big game in ASU's comeback win at then No. 6 Oregon with five catches for 95 yards, including a 51-yard reception, which earned him a place on the Sporting News Pac-10 All-Freshman team.
Arizona State Sun Devils-2003-Sophmore Year:
Hagan played in all 12 games that season with 10 starts. He earned honorable-mention All-Pac-10 honors, and led the team with 66 receptions and 1,076 receiving yards and scored nine touchdowns, which tied for seventh in the Sun Devil recordbook. Hagan ranked fifth in the Pac-10 and 20th in the country with an average of 89.7 receiving yards per game. He also led the team and finished seventh in the league with 5.5 receptions per game. Hagan caught at least three passes in every game of the season, and averaged 16.3 yards per reception. He turned in six 100-yard receiving games. Hagan recorded career highs in receptions and receiving yards October 18 at North Carolina with 11 receptions for 185 yards, and set up ASU's game-winning touchdown against the Tar Heels with a 42-yard catch to bring the ball down to the UNC five-yard line on the final drive. His 11 receptions in that game tied with three other Sun Devils for the fourth-best single-game effort in school history. Hagan also scored a career-high three touchdowns Noember 8 at Stanford, plus ended the season with a streak of three straight 100-yard games. One of his highlight plays was catching an 80-yard pass Nov. 28 against rival Arizona.
Arizona State Sun Devils-2004-Junior Year:
Hagan played in all 12 games, starting 11. He was one of 11 semifinalists for the 2004 Biletnikoff Award, which is annually presented to the top wide receiver in the nation. Hagan also earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors after being named an honorable-mention all-league selection in 2003. Hagan was also a second-team All-America and All-Pac-10 selection by rivals.com, while aslo being ranked second in the Pac-10 and seventh in the nation with 104.0 receiving yards per game. Hagan set the school record for receiving yards per game, while his 83 receptions and 1,248 yards both ranked second on the ASU single-season charts, and he was also second in the conference and 12th in the nation with 6.9 catches per game. Hagan caught 10 touchdown passes that year, which tied for sixth on the ASU single-season charts. Hagan also averaged 15.0 yards per reception, and turned in 100 or more receiving yards in eight games to set the school single-season mark. Hagan led the team in receiving in nine of 12 games, and also passed the 100-yard mark in each of the first three games of the year and ended the season with four straight 100-yard contests. He caught nine passes for 182 yards (both season highs) with one touchdown vs. Purdue in the Sun Bowl, and was named to the ESPN.com All-Bowl Team for his efforts against the Boilermakers. Hagan made eight receptions in each of the first three games of the season, while he hauled in four or more catches in every game in 2004. Hagan turned in eight catches for 154 yards and two TDs at Northwestern, while he tied his career best with three TD catches against UCLA. In that game, he tallied 160 yards and the three scores on just five receptions. During the season, Hagan had four TD receptions of 40 yards or more, including a season-best 79-yard scoring strike vs. UCLA.
Arizona State Sun Devils-2005-Senior Year:
Hagan earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors, and was named third team All-American by Rivals.com. Hagan earned honorable mention All-American honors by SI.com, and for the second consecutive year he was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, which is awarded annually to the nation's top collegiate wide receiver. Hagan was also named to the College Football Hall of Fame watch list, and was invited to play in the 2005 Senior Bowl postseason all-star game. Hagan was named the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player and was a co-winner of the Cecil Abono Co-Captain Award at the year-end banquet. He led the Sun Devils in all major receiving statistics, and amassed over 1,000 yards receiving for a school-record third consecutive year. Hagan finished third in the conference and eighth in the nation with 1, 210 receiving yards, plus was third in the Pac-10 and tied for 18th nationally with 77 catches, which was the third highest single-season total in school history, while his 1,210 receiving yards are the third -highest single-season total. He caught at least three passes in each game, which extended his school record of consecutive games with a reception to 41, the fourth-longest active streak in the country, and Hagan also tied the conference season-high with 11 catches at Oregon State on September 24. Hagan started in all 12 games, and led or tied for the team lead in receptions in nine games, and led or tied for the team lead in receiving yards in six games. Hagan averaged 100.8 receiving yards per game, the second consecutive season averaging over 100 yards, while he also had four games with 100 or more receiving yards, and four more with 90 or more yardsOn November 12, Hagan tied the conference career receptions record previously held by former Biletnikoff Award winner and former Indianapolis Colt Troy Walters of Stanford with a 15-yard reception from quarterback Rudy Carpenter, and later became the Pac-10 conference's all-time receptions leader on a two-yard touchdown pass from Carpenter with 7:14 left in the game at No. 14 UCLA. Hagan also tied College Football Hall of Fame member John Jefferson's ASU career receptions mark with his 14-yard reception from quarterback Sam Keller in the third quarter against No. 5 LSU on September 10, and established a new record in the fourth quarter with another 14-yard reception from Keller. Hagan broke Jefferson's ASU career receiving yards mark on a 45-yard pass from Keller in the first quarter at Oregon State, nd also tied Keith Poole's ASU career receiving touchdown record with his 20-yard scoring catch from Keller with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter against No. 25 Oregon on October 1, and set the new career mark November 5 at Washington State when he backed into the end zone for a score following a 43-yard halfback pass from Rudy Burgess with 9:19 left in the first quarter. Hagan had a career high 193 yards and tied his career-best with 11 catches at Oregon State to go along with two touchdowns, and followed that performance a week later against No. 1 USC with 10 receptions for 162 yards, which was the fourth highest single-game yardage of his career. Hagan had back-to-back games with 100 or more receiving yards for the second time when he had nine receptions for 115 yards vs. Washington October 29, and then caught six passes for 139 yards and a score the next week at Washington State. He had seven receptions for 95 yards against No. 5 LSU, and caught seven passes for 97 yards and a touchdown at No. 14 UCLA. He also had five catches for 97 yards against Rutgers in the 2005 Insight Bowl on December 27. Hagan was named a 2005 Playboy preseason All-American, becoming the 14th Sun Devil to earn that distinction, and was one of two wide receivers on the 2005 Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook Preseason All-America Team. Hagan was listed as the 20th-best player in the country on ESPN.com's list of the top 100 players for the fall, and was recognized as a Hard Hat Player for his work in ASU's winter strength and conditioning program for the second consecutive season.
Miami Dolphins-2006:
Hagan played in 16 games, which were all in a reserve role. He caught 21 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown, and also added four tackles on special teams. The first catch of his NFL career came on a 14-yard pass from Daunte Culpepper in opener at Pittsburgh on Stepember 7. After being held to one reception over the next four games, Hagan broke out to total 11 catches for 119 yards and a TD over the next two weeks. This included a six-catch, 66-yard performance at New York Jets on October 15, and a five-reception, 53-yard effort vs. Green Bay on October 22. In the Jets game, Hagan had a season-long 24-yard catch, and In the Packers contest, recorded the first touchdown of his career, on a 13-yard pass from Joey Harrington.
Miami Dolphins-2007:
For the 2007 season, Hagan had 29 catches for 373 yards and 2 touchdowns. He started once and played in a reserve role 13 games that season. He led the team in receptions once and in reception yardage twice this season. On Stepember 16 vs. the Dallas Cowboys, he had 2 catches for 33 yards and one touchdown, which came on a 21 yard pass from Trent Green. On October 14 at Cleveland, Hagan had 3 catches for 30 yards, an average of 10 yards per catch. On October 21 vs. New England, he led the team in reception yardage with 4 catches for 56 yards. On December 9 at Buffalo, Hagan made his first NFL start and led the team in both reception and reception yardage with eight catches for 93 yards, which at the time were both single game career highs.
Miami Dolphins/New York Giants-2008:
Hagan had a problem with dropping passes since being drafted in 2006, and that problem continued into 2008. After only playing in 4 games in 2008, on Novemeber 4, after only having 3 catches for 51 yards, Hagan was released by the Dolphins. He finished his Dolphins career with 53 catches for 645 yards and 3 touchdowns. On December 16, 2008, Hagan was signed by the New York Giants, but was inactive for the final 2 games of the season. Hagan made his Giants debut in the NFC Divisional playoff game vs. Philadelphia, when he played on special teams. The Giants hope he will emerge as a valuable player in 2009. Hagan is currently 3rd on the Giants depth chart, behind Steve Smith and Sinorice Moss.
