CSA 

What is emerging is that CSA is a very different examination to the video component of the old exam.  The communication skills historically tested in the video component of the former MRCGP exam are now included with minor modifications in the WPBA COTS assessments.  They clearly remain an important and vital component of the expectations of our trainees but tested by the trainer rather than externally.   

Communication skills are instilled as an important component of the CSA but are not exclusive to it.  The CSA additionally examines clinical applied knowledge and clinical examination skills as well.  It is particularly clinical examination which is emerging as accounting for the largest section of failures.   

The deanery will be delivering training on the CSA exam through the autumn.   

Messages 

• WPBA must be completed to at least the minimum requirements stipulated by the RCGP
• ARCP Panels are an ongoing process and all trainees will have their ePortfolios reviewed on an annual basis.
• The AKT examiners have reported a number of areas where they have identified trainee weaknesses that PDs and trainers may consider need addressing
• Communication skills assessment remains a key competency and is assessed by the WPBA COT
• The CSA tests communication but additionally other clinical skills expected of a general practitioner.
