Dear Parents and Guardians of Cougar Cubs,

Greetings!  I hope that everyone is enjoying this new school year!  It is hard to believe that we have completed three weeks of school.  This has been the smoothest and calmest opening since I have been principal at Rolesville Elementary.  I attribute the fantastic opening to students exhibiting RES (RESPECT, EFFORT, and SELF-CONTROL) behaviors; teachers outlining expectations and enforcing rules; and parents discussing and reinforcing appropriate school behaviors.  We are all working together as a team to ensure that ALL students are successful.  This is going to be an exciting and adventurous school year!

I want to welcome all of our new students and their families to Rolesville Elementary School.  Our current student enrollment is 621 students.  We have about 100 less students than we had last year.  You can tell a big difference when you are traveling through the halls.  Some of our third grade classes are over the state capacity; therefore we will need to reorganize and make a new class.  You will be notified if your child is impacted by this decision.

If you transport your child to school via car, we are asking that you have them at school by 9:00 am.  This will give your child enough time to get to class.  If your child is not seated in their class by 9:05 am, they will be sent to the office to receive a tardy slip prior to being admitted to class.  In the afternoons, please make sure that you are in the carpool line by 4:00 pm to get your child.  If you have not arrived by 4:05 pm, we will take your child to the main office and you will have to walk in to the school to get your child.  Please help us to be efficient in our carpool arrival and dismissal procedures.

Many parents have been walking their children to class for the first few weeks of school.  We appreciate your help with the transition to a new school year.  We are requesting that you now use the unloading zone in the carpool area during morning arrival.  Staff members and safety patrol members will help guide your child to their class.

For those of you who send your child to school on the bus, we are requesting that you have your child at the bus stop on time.  There should also be an adult at the bus stop in the mornings and the afternoons in order to provide adequate safety and supervision for our students.  We encourage you to go over bus safety rules with your child.   If you have an issue with the bus route or bus driver, you may contact the transportation department that correlates with your child’s bus route (Wake Forest Transportation 919-554-8631, Knightdale Transportation 919-217-5377, Wakefield Transportation 919-562-3630, or East Wake Transportation 919-365-2627).  Someone at the transportation department can lead you in the right direction in order to address your concern.

We have a very active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) here at Rolesville Elementary School.  The first PTA meeting was held on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 6:30 pm in the Media Center.  It was good to see so many of you at the meeting.  We encourage each parent to join the PTA.

Our Open House / Curriculum Night will be on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 6:00 pm -7:00 pm.  This will be a time for you to learn about what your child has been learning in the classroom and what they will be learning in the months ahead.

Thanks for letting us work with your child on a daily basis!

Sincerely,

Mr. Shane Barham
