What's This?

This is Roger Searjeant's personal website. As you will see from the categories on the left, most of this site is material relating to software development.

Google Sites

Rather than running my own web server just to support a mail-server, blog engine and wiki, using Google Sites saves me time and effort (and some money), at the expense of a little flexibility.  For some time I ran a Linux VPS using Rimuhosting (an excellent service - recommended) but did not make enough use of it to justify keeping it running.  I can thoroughly recommend Google Sites.  Almost all of my requirements are met comfortably by Google services (mail, documents, simple site hosting etc.) and the integration between the various Google applications is becoming so good that it makes sense to consolidate on their platform.

Many of the pages in here are written as Google Documents and simply exposed to the world by publishing in a site page (this takes just a few clicks). I use Google Documents to keep notes, in much the same way as a private Wiki.  I used to maintain a wiki (on the VPS) but authoring content is easier in Docs and I don't have to worry about admin and backups.  Some may argue that a wiki makes linking easier but to be honest, ctrl-k in Google Docs is almost as fast.

Right now there isn't a lot on this site, but I hope some of the material may be of use to others.
