Shakespeare in the Park 2011 News: Rocklin Shakespeare began as an idea in 2005 to start an annual Summer Shakespeare Festival in Johnson-Springview Park. The idea was realized in the summer of 2006 when we premiered our first production: William Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing. From 2006-2010 we produced five Shakespearean productions and premiered two new plays. Our goals throughout that time were to create a fun and secure space in which artists and actors could experiment with their craft, to stimulate collaboration through the support of a cohesive ensemble of players and to bring the fruit of our labors to the widest audience available by offering free admission. Though we always achieved these goals, alone they did nothing to keep us economically sustainable. Recent budget cuts to the city of Rocklin have forced changes to our previous arrangements with the Department of Parks and Recreation. The monetary needs of the department have necessitated many new charges and fees in order for the Shakespeare in the Park program to continue. Based on our current budget, we do not have the ability to pay the new charges and fees required to produce free Shakespeare in the Park for 2011. With this in mind, I have to announce that the Shakespeare in the Park program is on hiatus but I would like to emphasize that Rocklin Shakespeare is still alive and well. Currently we have four performances scheduled in April and possible performances in the works for May, September and October---they just aren't taking place in Johnson-Springview Park. Speaking on behalf of Rocklin Shakespeare, I am saddened by this current situation but very hopeful and encouraged about the future. In all change there is opportunity; we may look back on this as one of the best things to have happened to us. Still, we will miss seeing you in the park this summer. The best way to stay informed about our upcoming performances and activities is to follow our facebook page (which is streamed on the right). Thank you, Rocklin Shakespeare Director Other News About Rocklin Shakespeare: We now have a blog, Dramatic Dissemination, to serve as a think tank of ideas for community theater. All are welcome to contribute to the conversation! Our facebook page is still going strong with daily trivia updates about Shakespeare and details about all of our upcoming events. Our web designer is working on the permanent site for RocklinShakes.org. The site is a mammoth undertaking: think of an IMDB for our plays with the sleek look and functionality of the Apple website. With detailed biographies from all of the actors in Rocklin Shakespeare's history, footage, pictures and trivia about all of our productions, downloads of programs, posters, etc from years past and the ability for artists and audiences to directly interact and collaborate on future projects, the site will be something to behold. |
