NANCY STAPP AND FAMILY

The Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation was established in 2005 by Scott and Mary Fairfield in honor of wife, mother, and teacher, Donna Logan (family friend to Cheryl Perrin), who passed away from Breast Cancer in July, 2007.    The foundation helps families, who are confronted with serious illness or injury, raise money.  We would like to thank Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation for assisting us in raising money for Nancy and Joel.

To make a tax deductible donation (check or credit card) for Nancy and Joel (100% of your donation will go to the Stapp family), please go to the How You Can Help link on this page and click on the Helping Hearts for Friends link.  Thank you!

UPDATES

Thank you, Kim, for your wonderful updates!

Friday, 2/15

I spoke with Joel on Wednesday, and Nancy had been admitted the the Rehab Hospital, last Wednesday night (2/6).  She is doing better, but still has a long way to go.

Originally the plan had been for her to go on Monday the 4th...but late the Friday before the Rehab Hospital decided they thought Nancy's shunt wasn't working properly and they said she couldn't come until it was proved that it was fine.  When Joel emailed on Monday the 4th, he wasn't able to get an appointment until Friday the 8th...but his Step-Brother Eric and Step-Father Chris spent countless hours on the phone with the doctors office and the insurance company and were able to get Nancy and appointment with Dr. Kim on Tuesday and get the Rehab Hospital to take her on Wednesday.

When she saw Dr. Kim on Tuesday she had a Head CT and it was clear.  Joel says that Nancy has improved greatly in the last week, and that as of yesterday, the insurance company had approved for her to stay one more week.  They are hopeful to get one week more after that, but either way, she will be going to the Rehab Hospital as an outpatient 3 days a week once she is released.

Today, she did well in her therapy, and Joel says she was able to walk up and down 3 stairs.  She is scheduled to go on a "field trip" to the supermarket...can't wait to hear how that went!

She is open for visitors...the first week she was there, she wanted to concentrate on her therapy...but please call or visit if you have the chance!

Please pray for Nancy to continue to progress in a positive manner.  Give thanks to God for Eric and Chris and their tireless efforts on Nancy's behalf.  Continue to pray for everyone in the family, as they all need your support & strength!

Monday, 2/4 #2 from Joel

Unfortunately Nancy is NOT going back to the rehab facility any time soon.  Healthsouth is questioning whether the shunt in her head is working properly.  So they are requesting that she see the neurosurgeon Dr. Kim before they approve her to be readmitted back into the rehab facility.  He is the surgeon who did her surgeries at Hoag.  This is requested by the medical director at Healthsouth.  The earliest appointment we can get with Dr. Kim is on Friday at 9:15 am.  So a decision will not be made until then.  Nancy will be at home until further notice.

Love,
Joel

Monday, 2/4

Nancy is returning to the Rehabilitation Hospital today.  She has been declining rapidly during the past few weeks at home.  When she first came home, she was able to pull herself out of bed, and in to a wheelchair and negotiate with a walker.  Now, she cannot even pull herself over in bed.  At the rehab facility, she was in some sort of physical or occupational therapy for 3 hours a day, and at home it was only about 2 hours total per week.  By last week, she wasn't strong enough physically to handle the therapy at all.

Joel spent all last week taking Nancy to a number of doctors, including a Neurologist, Endocrinologist, Cardiologist and a couple of different therapists.  During those appointments, the doctors adjusted the number of medications she was on.  She is on too many to count, and they were not all doing what they were supposed to be doing.  Some she has been taken off completely, and others have had their doses reduced.

The doctors decided it was best that she return to the rehab hospital.  As of last Friday, the insurance had approved her to stay a week, but it is highly possible that she will be there 2 - 3 weeks, depending on the insurance company.  Joel has spent a lot of time that last few weeks fighting with the insurance company to approve additional care for Nancy...calling up to 5 times a day and finally they (with encouragement from the doctors) have given in.  Hopefully they'll see now, how important the rehab hospital is to Nancy's recovery, and will allow her the time she need to get her strength back to a place where she can function more normally.

Chris, Joel's Dad came down this weekend to spend some time with Joel and Nancy.  It was possible for Nancy to get back to the Rehab Facility on Friday, but with Chris coming in, they felt is best to give Nancy the weekend to spend some time with him, and prepare to return to the hospital.  Chris is flying out this afternoon...after he and Joel get Nancy back to the hospital.

Joel says Nancy is mentally alert, but could use some encouragement...so please feel free to send her a card or note
of encouragement...or stop by for a visit!

In case you need the hospital information again...here it is:

Visiting Hours - 9 am - 8 pm

At this point, we don't know what room she is in, but will let you know, as soon as she is settled.

Please pray for Nancy during this transition period.  She is not thrilled about having to go back to the hospital, but understands why it is necessary.  Pray for physical strength and a positive attd for her.  Pray for Joel, that he would continue to handle the transition as well.  With work, the kids, keeping up the house and all that goes with it, and now having Nancy back in Rehab, it is a struggle to juggle it all.  He is doing a great job, but needs all of the support he can get.  Pray for Eileen, and Margie and Chris as they have spent SO much time helping Joel with everything.  They all need refreshment and a continued positive outlook to keep both Nancy and Joel going!

Thanks to those of you who donated blood in the blood drive last week.  It wasn't a huge success, but any donation will help someone who needs it.  Thank you for giving of your time!

If you would still like to assist with meals, they would be appreciated!  Gift cards to Albertsons or Ralphs or any Gas gift cards are welcome too!

Thank you for continuing to support Nancy and Joel during this journey they are on...they are so lucky to have such a great support system of family and friends!

Sunday, 1/27

Nancy has been home from the Rehab Hospital for a little over 2 weeks now.  She, along with the family are experiencing all of the difficulties that this new life phase has to offer.

In the rehab hospital, Nancy was in some sort of therapy (physical, occupational or speech) about 3 hours per day.  Currently, she is only getting about 3 hours total per week.  Because of this, the level of her activity has decreased greatly and she has lost quite a bit of the strength she had built up on her left side.  This has made it difficult for her to get around the house, and therefore, she spends much of her time in bed.

The insurance has approved for an In-home care provider to be at the house for 2 hours per day.  Plus the 3 days a week where there is some sort of therapist there for an hour.

Joel's work schedule continues to be a challenge as he is away in San Diego and Victorville quite frequently.  Eileen, and Margie and Chris have been taking on the primary roles as caretakers for Sydney and Aaron...with Eileen staying with Nancy and Joel much of the time.  Someone needs to be at the house 24 hours a day with Nancy, so there isn't much time for a break for any of them.

Nancy has been having some trouble with her blood pressure...sometimes it is up high and sometimes it is down too low.  Joel and Eileen took her to the ER last week to see what they could diagnose, but even with and EKG they didn't find anything.

Joel has appointments set for Nancy for this week to see a number of specialists...who will hopefully help to regulate some of the medication she is on.  She'll be seeing a cardiologist, a neurologist and an endocrinologist.

As I am sure you can imagine, Nancy's spirits are sometimes low and she doesn't get to spend much time with Aaron as she can't hold him.  It is difficult for her to talk on the phone for an extended time, as most people have a hard time understanding her, and she gets tired quickly of trying to speak clearly enough for you to understand.

As you are reading this you are probably saying to yourself, "how can I help"...here are a few ideas:

1).  The Blood Drive is set for THIS Tuesday January 29th.  1-7 at the American Red Cross Fountain Valley Donor Center.  See the attached flyer for instructions on how to go on line and make an appointment.  There are PLENTY of appointment times available...IF YOU COULD PLEASE SIGN UP RIGHT AWAY AND PASS ON THE FLYER TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WE WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!   This is just one way we have to all give back to help others in need!

2) Prepare a meal for the family.  With Joel's crazy work schedule and Eileen and Margie & Chris trying to fill in wherever they can, they could sure use a night off from cooking!  You can email me if you are planning on bringing a meal...if you call Joel, he'll probably tell you not to worry about it...but I can just call and tell him it's coming...and he can't say no!

3) Stop by for a visit...I am SURE it would help EVERYONE if you had a couple of hours to spare and could go sit with Nancy, or relieve Eileen or Margie or Chris for a bit.  Call Joel on his cell if you have some time...I am SURE they could use your help!

4) Joel could still use some help financially if you have the desire or the means to do so.  There are still many hospital bills to pay, and when he needs to bring in extra home health care to cover when he is at work and Eileen or Margie & Chris are unavailable...it is costly.  Donations to the Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation are great...and gift cards for Gas or Groceries are always appreciated!

5) Pray, Pray, Pray...pray for strength, perseverance, endurance and peace for everyone.  I've included a scripture that a friend of mine has been currently meditating on...I think it helps to put it all in perspective...

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4

Monday, 1/7/08

Nancy is coming home on Thursday!  This Thursday, January 10th.

She has made major improvements in her progress toward recovery...enough so that the Insurance company will no longer pay for her to stay at the rehab hospital.

She is excited about coming home and starting to get back to a normal life.  A new "normal" though...as things have changed dramatically for the family since September 17th, 2007.

Joel is juggling a number of things...work, Sydney's school, work, Aaron, work, visits to Nancy at the hospital, work, and finances.  I say "work" so many times, as that is the area that Joel seems to be struggling the most with.  His employer has not been flexible at all with his schedule, and continues to send him away on multiple overnight trips each week.  Eileen and Margie and Chris have been taking Sydney and Aaron whenever Joel is gone, and with Nancy coming home this week, it will add another dimension to the stress level that Joel is carrying so courageously.

It is yet to be determined exactly what type of care Nancy will need at home.  She is doing better at getting around...she is able to pull herself out of bed and also out of a chair to a standing position.  She still does not have complete movement of her left side, so there is still much work to be done to strengthen that area.  It is probable that Nancy will have some sort of home health care, however Joel's insurance does not cover home health, so he is currently looking into the details and financial probabilities of that.

Nancy will probably need some sort of help while Joel is at work...so keep an eye out for an email asking for help.  Once we know what we are looking at, we'll let you know how we can use you.  It's possible, we may put out a request for help at the house.  Someone to sit with Nancy for a couple of hours during the day or night while Joel is at work, and Eileen, Margie and Chris are with Sydney and Aaron or are needing some relief themselves.

What you can do right now is pray that Nancy makes miraculous progress over the next 3 days prior to her being released and that Joel, Eileen, Chris and Margie are filled with the strength and the peace of God...that they may have endurance to persevere through this new challenge.  That the stress level for all would be manageable, and that Nancy would find comfort in being at home.  God can do all of these things if we JUST ask...so PLEASE ask...in abundance...and let's see how he moves!

Don't forget...Tuesday January 29th...1-7 pm.  Blood Drive at the American Red Cross Donation Center in Fountain Valley.  More Details and a flyer to follow shortly.

We'll keep you posted as we know more...

12/22

Nancy is progressing well, as she endures hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy each day.  She is walking with a walker, taking showers eating her meals in a chair and playing poker with her speech therapist.

When I spoke to Joel yesterday, he told me that his current insurance has approved for Nancy to stay in Tustin until the end of the year and he is currently working on getting approval from his new insurance for her to stay another 2 weeks into January.  Of course, we all were holding out hope that she would be recovered enough to be home for Christmas, but that is not to be.  She has adjusted to the fact that she won't be home, but is terribly sad that she is missing out on celebrating Christmas with her friends and family.

We know you all are SO busy during this crazy season, but PLEASE, if you have time, stop by and visit with her this weekend, or over the next week...even if it is just for 15 minutes.  Having frequent visitors at this time of year is good for Nancy's spirit.  She enjoys showing off if you are there for her physical therapy.  It is good because it makes her work a little harder...and in the long run will benefit her greatly.

If you just can't make it by for a visit, PLEASE call her on her cell.  714/309-5101.  She doesn't talk for very long, but it helps her to feel remembered.  If she doesn't answer, DON'T leave a message, as she is not able to check her voice mail.  You can also call her on her hospital room phone # at 714/573-5287

You can also send cards directly to the hospital.  Just make sure you put on the address - Patient - Nancy Stapp and they will get to her.

Joel sends thanks out to all of you who have sent cards or gifts to Sydney.  It has really lifted her spirits!  Joel asked me to mention that Sydney was Student of the Month in her class.  Joel, Eileen, Margie and Chris all attended the special award ceremony in her honor.

As we celebrate the birth of Christ this week...remember to keep Nancy, Joel, Sydney and Aaron in your prayers.  Also continue to pray for Eileen, Margie and Chris and Chris and Shirley as they all still need to be covered in prayer.  This is an extremely challenging time for all of them, as they are juggling Joel's varied work schedule, Sydney's school and homework, babysitting for Aaron and Sydney and their own work and other commitments. Pray for endurance for Nancy, peace and strength for Joel and God's grace for everyone.

Blessings to you all!  Merry Christmas!

Tuesday, 12/11

Joel called with a special request...

If you have a minute, could you please send a card addressed to JUST Sydney?  She has expressed frustration lately with the fact that all these cards have come to the house for Mommy and Daddy or The Stapp Family, and she feels like everyone has forgotten about her.  She thinks everyone is so concerned with Nancy and Aaron that she doesn't matter.

Joel isn't sure if she was just having a bad day, or if things are finally taking their toll on her sweet spirit.

Any card will do...a just to say hello card...a how are you doing card...a Christmas card...or just a quick note to let her know you are thinking of her.

In case you need it...
Sydney Stapp

Thanks so much for taking the time to make her feel special, remembered and important!

Nancy is making great progress in her recovery!

Today, she is being transferred to a new hospital - Health South Tustin Rehabilitation Hospital.  Here she will receive less "hospital" care and more rehabilitation and therapy.  They say a patients "average" stay is approximately 11 days - but usually a maximum of 3 weeks, so Nancy is close to being home soon!

Unfortunately her stay at this hospital is mainly dictated by insurance and not patient need, so let's pray that she get's the maximum benefit of this place before they send her home!

Joel and Eileen visited the new hospital and thought it was good.  The people were nice and it has modern equipment...this is an acute rehabilitation facility...so they will be "kicking up" the physical therapy.

Nancy called me yesterday to tell me the news.  She didn't know that Joel had called already.  That is one of the ways we can see great progress in Nancy.  She has her cell phone and is making calls...so don't be surprised if you get a phone call!  I was at Linen's & Things when my phone rang...it was such a nice surprise to see "Nancy Cell" on the screen!

Nancy is excited but scared at the same time about the move.  She is comfortable where she is, has gotten to know many people by name and is afraid she "won't have the new staff wrapped around her finger" (a direct quote from Nanc).  She knows with this new hospital will come extensive therapy and hard work...she knows it's going to be tough...so if you talk to her or see her, PLEASE encourage her!  She expressed to me yesterday that she just wants to get back to her everyday life...so I told her (and so has Joel) that she needs to work really hard to get better and she can do that.

She is taking more steps with her walker during therapy and is getting more movement out of her left side.  She still has double vision, so she is still wearing a "patch" over her eye, which they move every 3 hours to help her see better.  It looks like she'll have to go back to wearing glasses of some sort to help with the double vision.  Her sense of humor is strong as ever and her spirit has been good.

Joel went back to work yesterday...and of course they scheduled him to be in San Diego and Sylmar over the next 3 days, which means he is mostly NOT home...and away from Nancy, Sydney and Aaron.  Margie & Chris and Eileen are taking the children while he is gone. Pray for Joel as he travels...for travel mercies and for peace about being away from Nancy and the children.

Thank you again to all of you who helped with the boutique in one manner or another.  Forwarding the flyer, coming to shop, set up, clean up, selling raffle tickets, getting raffle prizes, making baked goods.  It was such a successful event!  The latest total collected between vendor booth fees, raffle tickets, bake sale donations and direct donations to the Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation is...are you ready for this
……………$2,075.60!!!  That's not including checks that have come in since the boutique.  Over the course of the week after the boutique, I began to receive checks in the mail for Nancy...mostly from people I don't even know, who got forwarded the Boutique flyer by someone I do know...the most impressive of which is a check for $1,000...yes...one thousand dollars. What a true blessing it is to see how far Nancy and Joel's story can reach out and touch someone.  Nancy and Joel can really put this money to good use!  With the mounting hospital bills (and when I say mounting...I mean MOUNTING!!!) any help that Joel can get financially would be a blessing.  Nancy has been in the hospital for just shy of 90 days.  To give you an idea of what Joel is dealing with financially...the bill for just the first 2 days at Fountain Valley was $40,000.  That is prior to insurance...but IMAGINE how much the bill is for a a 6 weeks stay at Hoag's ICU...not to mention the many surgeries and procedures Nancy has had.

I tell you this, so you know that Nancy and Joel still need your help.  They are not out of the woods yet...and there is still a LONG way to go.  Please continue to keep Nancy and the family in your prayers, and if God leads you to help in some other capacity, like meals or gift cards or money donations, please know that anything is appreciated.

As we begin to celebrate this season of the greatest miracle...the birth of Christ, let's rejoice in Nancy's recovery and great progress.   It is truly a miracle that she is still with us...and we are SO thankful to God for that!

Monday, 12/3

The Boutique on Friday night was HUGE success!!!!

Without the straight donations to Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation and the checks that people have promised to send, we raised just shy of $2,000 for Nancy and Joel.  That is ALL money that will go STRAIGHT to them!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone who forwarded the flyer, emailed all of your friends and family, came a shopped, donated baked goods and raffle items!  It was a WONDERFUL evening!  Look for pictures shortly on the Website!

I talked with Joel yesterday (Sunday) and he had GREAT things to report!  Nancy is doing SO well!!  On Friday her Trach was taken out, and the opening has almost healed completely already.  Nancy says she can't even feel where it was!  She was moved to a new room on Friday night...she seems to be playing musical rooms and beds these days, so if you are visiting, please be sure to check with the information desk to see where she is!

Joel watched her physical therapy on Friday and said she stood with the parallel bars for about 1-1/2 minutes 3-4 times.  He was quite impressed with how strong she is getting.  Nancy so wanted to come to the Boutique on Friday night!  She was questioning her therapists about how they could make it happen.  She is quite determined to get out of the hospital and back to her normal life.  She is bound and determined to make it out in time for Christmas!

Saturday, Sydney had a sleep over at Madeline's and Aaron stayed with Margie and Chris, so Joel took a pizza and some flowers to Nancy and they had a "date night" at the hospital.  He said it was really great to spend some quality time together.

He told me yesterday that he was planning on visiting with Aaron this morning.

Amy visited today and emailed to say that she was doing great!!!  She was eating her lunch in her wheel chair and using a spoon to eat her yogurt all on her own.  She was talking up a storm.  Her sense of humor is definitely back, and it was so great to see her improvement!!!!!

Well...that's it for today...continue to pray for Nancy, that she would continue to improve each day with no setbacks.  That her attitude and her spirit would stay strong and that she is comfortable in whatever room she is in.  Pray for Joel as he is getting to the point of having to consider going back to work.

Thursday, 11/29

I went to visit Nancy for a bit today.  Joel and I met at the hospital with Aaron.  Boy, is he a cutie (Aaron...not Joel...ok well, Joel is too...but you know what I mean).

Nancy looked GREAT and was in GREAT spirits!!  She waved when I walked in and started chatting with me immediately.  It was such a refreshing change from my last visit, which was much too long ago.  (She was sick and throwing up the whole time, and I was so torn to leave her!)  This time, we were able to visit and chat the entire time I was there, which was about an hour.  I could have stayed for hours and visited...but had to get to work.

Her lunch came while we were there and she asked if I would feed her...of course I said yes, and she asked the nurse to get the homemade chicken noodle soup that Eileen had made for her.  Her plate of shredded chicken with gravy, potatoes and corn did not look appetizing at all.  While she waited for her soup, I made a little sandwich of the chicken and she took a bite and immediately said "disgusting".  I felt so bad!!  The nurse brought in the container of soup and also some thickening agent, which has to be put into whatever liquids Nancy intakes.  There is still the fear of her aspirating on liquids, so they thicken them up so she can swallow properly with out choking.  I fed her all of the noodles and chicken and she ate it up very quickly.  She said she was hungry and it was good to see her eat!

Her trach is capped off and has been for about 2 days now.  She is not on oxygen, and is completely breathing on her own.  This is a huge success in her recovery!  It is possible that the trach will be removed within the next week, however they are cautious with this as they don't want to jump the gun on it.

On Wednesday, Nancy took her first step with a walker!  The bummer was that she got ill immediately after.  Today, she told me and Joel that she took 3 steps and didn't get sick...another huge victory!

Margie brought someone in on Tuesday and gave Nancy a pedicure.  She told me how great it felt!

The family had a meeting on Tuesday with all of Nancy's nurses and therapists.  They are pleased with the progress she is making.  It is possible that she will be transferred from Kindred in about a week or so to another facility where she will have more intense therapy.  If you visit...she's been moved again to another room...still on the 2nd floor...but now in room #217.  She's in bed 1 next to the window, so it is much more bright and cheery than before.  Joel continues to bring Aaron to visit...and has even got comfortable enough that he takes Aaron directly to her room.  Joel is planning to take Sydney tomorrow as she is off of school, and after taking care of a number of things, will head up to the Boutique to check things out.

Nancy wished out loud today that she wanted to be at the Boutique!  She wondered if there was ANYWAY she could get there...I am sure she is itching to do some Christmas shopping.  Nancy's favorite day, was Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving).  She was one of the crazy people who would get up at O-dark thirty and fight the crowds for the best deals.

REMEMBER - the Boutique is TOMORROW (FRIDAY NOVEMBER 30)  6-10 PM - Yorba Linda Community Center.  Don't forget to tell all of your friends, co-workers, neighbors and family.  If you haven't had a chance to get with Cheryl on Bake Sale items, please email her at cherylperrin@dslextreme.com.  Also, I failed to mention in my last update that we need helpers to work the Bake Sale table...so let Cheryl know if you are available...even for just a half an hour of your time would be GREAT!

Tuesday, 11/27

Nancy has continued to progress well this last week.  She is eating regular food as of Wednesday, and was even able to "enjoy" Thanksgiving dinner.  I say enjoy lightly, as I am sure the hospital Thanksgiving meal was just not up to par with what Eileen or Margie would have made!

She has been moved again to a new room, and is now in Room #224 on the second floor.  She is speaking quite well through her trach and is able to hold a conversation now.  Joel is encouraging visitors who may not have visited yet...to please visit.  Now that Nancy is making such great progress, it is going to get harder for her to tolerate the seclusion the hospital environment provides.

She is continuing to get stronger both physically and mentally, and Joel even suggested that she is starting to return to her old "smart ass" self.  If you know Nancy at all...you know that she is usually full of wise cracks...so the fact that she is joking around and smarting off is a GREAT sign that her spirit is getting stronger as well.

Joel took the dogs (Elvis and Priscilla) by last Wednesday for a visit.

Speaking of the Boutique...(nice transition...huh?)...it is THIS Friday...November 30 from 6-10 pm at the Yorba Linda Community Center...Imperial Room.  We have  TON of vendors who are ready to help you with your Christmas shopping needs and will allow you to support Nancy and Joel at the same time.  Remember that our emails are the ONLY way we are able to publicize this...so PLEASE remember to forward the flyer (if you haven't already) to everyone you know.  The responses we are getting from those who have forwarded it out already are amazing!!  If you have already forwarded it out to everyone you know...why not do it again to remind them that it is only 2 days away.  Don't let them forget about it...how about telling them you'll meet them there to shop together!  What fun it would be to get a group together to shop...and enjoy some baked goods.

Speaking of baked goods (ooh look...another smooth transition)...we are in need of your HELP.  If you are on this email chain then you have a relationship with Nancy or Joel or are close to someone who is.  If you live in the area, we would REALLY appreciate it if you would donate some baked goods for us to sell at the Boutique.  Cheryl will be coordinating the baked goods table, so please contact her if you can help at cherylperrin@dslextreme.com.   If you aren't a baker...go to the store and buy something yummy...wrap it up and bring it along with you when you come to shop!  All proceeds earned will go directly to Nancy and Joel.

Prayers for this week would be for Nancy to continue to make great improvements, for strength for Joel, Sydney and Aaron, and for a successful Boutique on Friday!

Thanks to Amy, Heidi and Cheryl for their many hours put into making the Boutique a huge success!
