My name is Isaac. I am an 11 year old boy who loves to indoor rock climb. I have a severe disability which means that I can't speak, I can only understand simple words and phrases, I have weak muscles and I have a short attention span. Some people think that this might mean I will never be able to rock climb. They are wrong.
I am very happy that my mum, the Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing Centre, some wonderful volunteers and my occupational therapist have worked together to figure out how to help me enjoy rock climbing. I am also very grateful to Tandem who have given me some funding to enable me to participate. To keep me and my team of volunteers motivated, mum has written some goals and planned out some strategies to help me achieve them.
My mum hopes that learning to rock climb will improve my health and give me the opportunity to make some friends. It's great for the volunteers too as they are learning more about people and what makes them tick. The Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing Centre is doing well out of me coming too - it's just good business to enable more people to come and join in the fun.
I love my life and I have a lot of fun. It is a bit tough for me and my family sometimes because people don't understand. Get a glimpse of life with a family member that has a disability by reading a blog called the Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs of Parenting Children with Disabilities.
