Ubiquitous Positioning

Ubiquitous Positioning was published by Artech House in 2008 and is based on the early chapters of my PhD thesis.

The book is aimed at business people and those interested in technology, and provides a practical, in-depth understanding of ubiquitous positioning - the technology that identifies the location and position of people, vehicles and objects in time and space in the digitised networked economy. I believe the future and growth of ubiquitous positioning (aka Whereness)will be fuelled by the convergence of many areas of technology - including communications, mobile telematics, internet technology, location, sensing and geographic information systems, and the web.

The first part of the book has an overview of current and future applications from areas as diverse as sports and games, road tolling, security, logistics, supply chain management, health, wellbeing and care. The second part covers technology including radio positioning, sensor-based systems, maps and mapping, Web 2.0 and the semantic web.

I wrote this book to share the knowledge I picked up over the past few years while studying for the PhD, in particular to highlight the commercial potential of what I believe is an exciting new area of technology
