In 2007, I completed two bio-critical essays on the English writers John Cornford and Edward Upward, which were published October, 2007. Recently, I published an article entitled '"Mad Girl's Love Song": Sylvia Plath and the Work of Mourning.' Click here to read this essay. Click here to read this. | Biography I was born in Northern Ireland, studied at universities in England, and came to the U.S. to work on the papers of the young cultural analyst Christopher Caudwell who was killed in the Spanish Civil War and whose papers are housed at the University of Texas. I was awarded a Ph.D. from Brown University for my work on Caudwell and my book Christopher Caudwell (1987) was published in the series "Critics of the 20th Century" edited by Christopher Norris. Click here for a review of this book. In 1996, I published A Matter of Faith , a book on the fiction of the Irish writer Brian Moore. This monograph was selected by Choice as an "outstanding academic book." (a synopsis and some early reviews of this book.) During 2003-04, I was teaching on a Fulbright Fellowship at the the University of Montenegro, and shortly before that I was Fulbright Professor of American Literature at the University of Zagreb (1997—2000). For the 2006-2007 academic year, I was a Visiting Professor at the University of Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in English, Irish, and American literature. During this period, I was also a Visiting Professor at the University of Split, Croatia, where I taught an upper-level course in modern American literature. During November - December, 2007 I was teaching on a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to the University of Osijek, Croatia, where I taught American literature to undergraduates, and a graduate course entitled "Race, Class and Gender in Selected American Fiction." From October 2010 to June 2011 I was a Visiting Professor at the University of Zadar, Croatia, as well as Visiting Professor at the University of Mostar. Presently (October 2011--February 2012) I am at the University of Mostar. Teaching ExperienceI have taught at universities in Africa and in the United States. My duties as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Zagreb and at Montenegro included teaching American literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as graduate courses on literary and cultural theory. As well as being a contributing editor for the Modernist Journals Project, I have taught numerous courses in the English and Modern Culture and Media Departments at Brown University. (Please click HERE to see a short version of my c.v.) My predominant interests are in modern and contemporary literature and culture, as reflected in my teaching and research. I have taught courses at Brown on Contemporary American and British Fiction, The Best Seller and/as Literature as well as a course entitled Modernism(s), and another on James Joyce. Just before I left to take up my Fulbright appointment, I experimented with another course on popular literature entitled Popular Cultural Texts: A Generic Reading (click for description). Current Research I recently published a bio-critical study of the novelist Patrick Hamilton (1904-1962). Within the past few years, I have published two other bio-critical monographs. One on the life and work of John Cornford, the young Communist intellectual who was killed in the Spanish Civil War. Another on Edward Upward, the influential contemporary of Auden, Isherwood, and Spender. I have also written essays on Sylvia Plath, Brian Friel, and James Joyce (see below and side-bar) over the past year or so.
