Make NACA duct, and shape and fiberglass outside of fuselage. 28 Nov 2009. I was about ready to router the channels for VHF COM1 per the sketch in the plans (front of the fuselage), but wasn't happy with the tight angle I needed to get it to fit. Decided I should actually think about what I was doing. Above scale drawing shows where I'll put the antennas (can't bring myself to say "antennae"): COM1, COM2, VOR/LOC1 VOR/LOC2, ILS GS, MKR BKN. Antenna dimensions taken from RST Engineering drawings (http://www.rst-engr.com/rst/catalog/airplane_antenna.html), with 20 degree angle (half-way between Jim's 10-30 degrees). Not shown, but will be there eventually, are GPS and ELT antennas. 28 Nov 2009. Rear end patched up with dry micro, and dramatically trimmed foam near LWY and upper longeron (other side similar). 28 Nov 2009. Step reinforcement belt-sanded down flush. Also note new tape for landing brake: Gorilla tape comes 1 in wide, I just had to redo my hack job with the gray stuff. 27 Nov 2009. Routed 1/16 in around landing brake, and built up with 1 in duct tape. Wood step reinforcement floxed in place; will sand flush after cure. 27 Nov 2009. NACA scoop and LG area almost ready for glassing. Joggle formation worked well in forward part of NACA scoop, rather poorly in aft portion. The two corners I didn't use dry micro developed air bubbles. Found some oral syringes at CVS (no needles) which I'll use to inject epoxy into the bubbles. Void near center of picture was subsequently filled with dry micro. 26 Nov 2009. Two ply BID on inside of NACA scoop. Also added urethane to wooden triangle pieces, will trim later. We'll see how the glass "joggle" turns out. Idea for getting a sharp corner snarfed from Marc Z's website. 21 Nov 2009. Urethane for NACA scoop sanded down, and aluminum inserts for LG cover screws floxed into bulkheads. 08 Nov 2009. Urethane blocks between aft landing gear bulkhead and firewall, beneath which is 2 ply BID. 07 Nov 2009. Plywood reinforcements for the landing gear bulkheads and firewall are floxed and peel plied. 07 Nov 2009. Urethane foam for NACA scoop are microed in place. In foreground is the jig saw with hacksaw blade (modified to T-shape with Dremel) that I'll use to rough trim the sides. |
