Chapter 4

Fuselage bulkheads

06 Apr 2009.  Instrument panel v2.0, now with proper foam!

29 Mar 2009.  Fuselage station F22 bulkhead, forward and aft sides, now made with the proper foam.

28 Mar 2009.  Fuselage station F28 bulkhead (top, now using the proper foam) and aft landing gear bulkhead (bottom, now reinforced).

21 Mar 2009.  Forward landing gear bulkhead (top and bottom pieces), glassed.

06 Mar 2009. Aft landing gear bulkhead, after glassing both sides.  I'll finish the other one, then re-do the F-22 and F-28 bulkheads and instrument panel.  (21 Mar 2009, 3ply + 8ply UNI reinforcing glass still needed in this pic. In progress now.)

04 Mar 2009. Waiting for me at home, after four weeks of business travel, was a package from Aircraft Spruce.  Cool!  It was foam, really dense foam.  Specifically 18lb Last-a-Foam.  Huh.  Wonder where this stuff is used, must be in a really structural place... like the bulkheads.  But I already made the bulkheads... Waitaminute!  So what did I use before?  4.5lb Last-a-Foam.  #$%@!!  Oh well, better to find this out now, rather than AFTER I built an airplane around weak bulkheads.  Ok, so I'm going to build a new F-22, F-28, and instrument panel.

This time, I used my friend's CNC machine to cut out the bulkhead parts.  Used the CAD files from Marc's site, imported and edited with QCad.

01 Feb 2009.  Aft face of the instrument panel (the side I'll be looking at when sitting in the plane).  I can almost imagine starting to make pretend airplane noises.

01 Feb 2009.  Forward face of instrument panel, showing reinforcing ribs.  The wiring channel edges came out nice and square: added dry micro between the layers (to avoid air bubbles), then after knife-trim put down wax paper and rested a board over the whole forward face.

25 Jan 2009.  Landing gear bulkheads, forward (top) and aft (bottom), before glassing.  The darker portions points are hardpoints, 22-ply layups of bidirectional fiberglass.

25 Jan 2009.  Bulkheads for fuselage stations 28 (top) and 22 (bottom).

10 Jan 2009.  Doesn't look like much (now), but that's a seat back.
