GERMS MOVE FAST! CAN YOU OUTRUN THEM? This seasons' germs are running rampant. This is the most popular season for them. We'd like to take some time to discuss a couple here: MRSA and the seasonal flu. In light of recent outbreaks of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), health departments counsel families to take a "five prong" approach to prevent it: Handwashing: Use soap and water or hand sanitize several times a day. Shower soon after participating in contact sports No-Sharing: Avoid sharing personal items such as clothing, towels, uniforms, razors, cosmetics and toiletries. Clean Environment: One part chlorine bleach diluted by nine parts water or a disinfecting kitchen spray will neutralize surfaces that may have been in contact with skin or wounds. Sports equipment such as helmets, gym mats and weight-room equipment should be disinfected. Also kitchen and bath surfaces, door knobs and telephones. Cover Wounds: Wash wounds and infections with soap and water and cover them with dry sterile bandages until it heals. Surveillance: Look for draining wounds or a slow-healing skin infection and seek medical attention. Getting tested will make sure the right antibiotic is used. For more information visit the state Health Department website SEASONAL FLU What is influenza (flu)? The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.
