Summary of the 2012 Florida-Bahama Synod… this is the meeting that Lyle Swihart and Pastor attended as representatives of Redeemer. The summary gives some details of what was decided at the Assembly, the budget, who was elected and other important information. Please take some time to read about your church! ---------------------------------------------- 2012 Assembly Summary
The 25th Annual Assembly of the Florida-Bahamas Synod was held at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel in Orlando on May 4-6, 2012. There were 435 voting members, 180 clergy and 20 lay rostered persons, 208 lay members, and 27 others (Synod Council, Conference Chairs and 11 Youth). 76 visitors registered as well. Norman and Donna Figy directed 25 volunteers who served as pages, ushers, and support personnel. "God's Radical Hospitality" was the theme. Dr. Shauna Hannan of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary guided us through three sessions of Luke 15, illustrating that its context intended it to be a culmination of the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin. Dr. Hannan challenged the assembly to look at the well-known parable as the "Parable of the Hospitable Father," and at how God's radical hospitality toward us is similar to the father's radical hospitality to both sons in the parable. Ordained at the opening Eucharist was Eliexar Ramirez, who will serve the Hispanic Ministry in Miami. As Pastor Ashley Nicolls, member of Synod Council writes, "It was an amazing sight to see approximately 200 clergy lined up to lay hands and giving him prayers and blessings." Assembly registrants also donated "a truck load of towels" for the foot-washing rite during opening worship; used towels were laundered and all of them were donated to a homeless shelter. Over $10,000 was also given in offering to go to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. A Bishop's reception was held after worship on Friday night, celebrating 25 years as an ELCA Synod. Past Bishops, Lavern Franzen and William Trexler were present at the reception. The Rev. Franzen led the worship on Saturday morning, and the Rev. Trexler preached at the closing Eucharist. Elections were held for Synod Treasurer, Synod Council positions, voting members for the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, Synod Consultation Committee, and Synod Discipline Committee. Those elected are: Synod Treasurer: Jerry Johnson, AIM Synod Council: Pr. William Hamilton (PCLE), Alan Klotsche, Cindy Kamp, Lynda Mack, Pr. Ashley Nicholls, Kris Wright AiM, Caitlin D. Parson (Youth) Discipline Committee: Pr. Ellen Cross, Pr. Troy Ehlke, Lynn Stanavich, Jennifer Dritt Consultation Committee: Steve Beumer, Judith Bunker, Pr. Pam Northrup, Pr. William Hamilton, 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly Voting Members: Pr. Marjorie Weiss, Pr. Rosemary Backer, Tracy Moffatt, Hal Wold, H. Phillips Stall, Raeann Purcell, Pr. Ellen Cross, David Thoresen DM, Caitlin Parson, Derek Wojciak, Pr. Sally Cook, Pr. Jim Young, Judith Bunker Four Resolutions were considered and passed: The Resolution on Amendments, following actions of Churchwide Assembly, streamlines the process for electing a bishop when the office is vacant, reduce the required nominees for executive positions to one, and enable the Synod Council to conduct business electronically. The Resolution on Racial Healing on invokes prayer for the Florida justice system and the families involved in recent events in Sanford, urges congregations to study the ELCA social statement on racism and the one proposed on criminal justice, and calls for congregations to develop cross-cultural competencies in their own neighborhoods. The Resolution on Fair Trade Products urges congregations to purchase and use products that reflect the justice values of the gospel. The final resolution adopted a spending plan for the year ending January 31, 2013 of a revised $3,015,275 and for the year ending January 31, 2014 of a proposed $3,073,118. During part of the Bishop's report to the Synod, he announced that Rev. Dr. Rita Gardner Tweed would step into the Director of Evangelical Mission role, vacated by Rev. David Anglada. Connie Schmucker, AiM, will step into the role of Assistant to the Bishop for the West Side of Florida. Both of these calls are co-terminus with the Bishop's term. Carlos Pena, Vice President of the ELCA, brought greetings from Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson. Pastor Livenson Lauvanus, the President of the Lutheran Church in Haiti, brought an update on the progress of the church and its significant ministry in evangelism and cholera prevention as part of the report of the Global Mission Team. A joint report from Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary told the story of the seminary's transformation into the theological graduate school of the University; both campuses will remain in their historic locations. Together in Mission announced its latest grant recipients, and LLMI told of the growing success of the operations at Luther Springs Camp. This being a workshop assembly, Saturday afternoon's session began with a workshop presented by Susan Pearsall of the Disney Institute. The topic was how quality Customer Service was essential to realizing organizational goals. After the presentation, Dr. Shauna Hannan helped debrief the experience and tie it back to hospitality in the congregation, saying "If there is something that can move the gospel along, why not use it? ... What can we not afford to ignore in those in front of us?" Vice-President Cheryl Stuart reported on two matters of significance. An Assembly Planning Task Force is considering possible changes in the date and programming of the assembly. Sample polling was done on June dates and including a service project in future assemblies. The Synod Council will also develop a synod profile in advance of the election of a bishop at the 2013 Assembly. At the end of the assembly, Bishop Benoway announced that he would not be available to serve a third term. God's Radical Hospitality was in our midst as the assembly shared laughter with Pastor Steve Wigdahl during announcements. Signs of God's Radical Hospitality were in our midst as we communed, washed each other's feet, and were given cool water to offer to others. In the span of a life, 25 years is just the beginning of setting a course for the future. Martin Luther wrote, "This life therefore is ... not being but becoming ... We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified."
