Reading

Reading is the Key to success in anything you do!

Kindergarten

is the first formal start of  your child's education, however your child started learning from you first. So it is Key to continue working with your child along with his/her teachers to help your child be and most important FEEL sucessful.

At the end of Kindergarten your child will need to:

  1.  Recognize and know the sounds of all their letters.
  2. Be able to put letter sounds together to produce new words. For instance, cvc words (hot, mop).
  3. Use reading startegies... look at the picture... get your mouth ready..... does that make sense?.....point at every words... reread.
  4. Recognize sight words.
  5.
  6. Retell a short story- recalling characters, setting, and sequence of events.

These are a few things to know to help your kindergartener become great readers. :)

Grade

As your child goes from one grade to another you will amazed at how much your child needs to learn in that grade.  Don't be alarmed!  Because they really can do it! With the help of your teachers and YOU, they can do anything.

At the end of first grade your child will need to:

  1. Decode words that have 2 vowels together (cv/vc words... boat, meal). I use the saying... "2 vowels go walking the first one does the talking."
  2. Decode words that have a silent e (snake, bike).
  3. Decode words with r controlled vowels ( bark, for)
  4. Decode words that have blends and digraphs in them (phone, blame)
  5. Recognize sight words
  6. Retell a longer story- recalling charcters, setting and sequence of events.
  7. Be able to remember and apply reading strategies.

Again these are just a few things that are taught in the classroom, if you would like more specific ideas on how to help your child, please talk to me or the regular ed. teacher.
