The first US combat troops arrive in Vietnam.

The miniskirt makes its appearance, in time for 35 million boomer women (and, perhaps, a few men).

25% of all milk is delivered to homes by milkmen (and, perhaps, a few women). Cost of a gallon of milk is $.95.

The L.A. Dodgers win the World Series over the Minnesota Twins. (4-3)

In November, the worst power failure in history blacks out Ontario and nine U.S. states, including New York. The power is out for 12 hours.  Nine months later, a whole lot of post-boomer babies are born.

Bill Crosby, starring in I Spy, becomes the first African American to headline a television show.

Days of Our Lives premieres on television.

Tom Jones wins a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

New words, "flower power," "discotheque," "kook," "dude," "groupie," and "no way," become part of the vernacular. 

The Astrodome, the first domed stadium, is completed.

90% of silver is removed from coins, only a "clad" cover is silver.

Silicon chips are introduced.

1965 the war in Vietnam continues to worsen as whatever the Americans do including major bombing of North Vietnam they continue to lose more men , at the same time the Anti-War movement grows and in November 35,000 march on Washington as a protest against the war. There is also civil unrest with rioting, looting and arson in Los Angeles. This was also the first year mandated health warnings appeared on cigarette packets and smoking became a no no. The latest craze in kids toys was the Super Ball and The Skate Board. Fashions also changed as womens skirts got shorter mens hair grew longer as the The miniskirt makes its appearance. Sony introduces it's doomed Betamax Recorder and Hypertext is introduced for linking on the Internet. The St Louis Arch is completed and The Beatles release 4 new albums including "Help".

  • Ranger 8 crashes into the Moon after a successful mission of photographing possible landing sites for the Apollo program


  • Ranger 9 sends back live TV broadcast when it crashes on to the moon
