Riverside is unique from other structures in the district due to its connection with the New Deal's Public Works Administration which helped finance its construction. The 1936 Art Deco building was designed by Robinson & Campau who were known for their historic buildings such as Grand Rapid's Civic Auditorium and Grand Rapids Public School's Central High School.
