Joining a bandRiver City Music welcomes new players. We offer you the opportunity to put your skills into practice, with a group of like minded players, under the direction of a professional conductor. This is a great path for those who have had lessons, but not performed publicly, and for those who have performed with school bands, to follow on after leaving school. There is no minimum or maximum age for players. Your ability is the guide for entry and progress. Currently, the minimum standard is the equivalent of AMEB grade 2, however we recommend you discuss standards when enquiring for a more complete picture. All players are expected to provide their own instrument. River City do own some instruments (mainly timpani). Again, just ask. There are four "terms" of about ten weeks each, per year. Practice is one evening per week for two hours. Players are expected to make a commitment to turn up every practice. It upsets the balance if some are missing and unfair to all involved. Gigs are offered on a written form. If enough players are available, it happens. If not, players from other bands may be approached, or the gig is refused. Gigs are important as they provide the "need to achieve performance standard" and are an important source of income for the group, and without income the fees would be much higher. Membership costs $20 per year. Band fees are $80 per term, billed at commencement, and the fee does not increase if more than one band is joined. Reduced fees may be available for some members. Students are 1/2 price. Disabled members of Musical Chairs who are also members of The Sporting Wheelies Association get half their fees paid by Sporting Wheelies as a grant this year. There is a family discount. How it works is that, at the discretion of the committee, the family pays the two highest fees but subsequent family members are free. A monthly newsletter is sent to those who supply an email address. There are no stereotypes for players, you are welcome if you are a bricklayer, barrister, schoolkid or a headmaster. Now check out the band pages for the type and style that suits you, then email to check the vacancies and get information. Click here to enquire. You are also welcome to turn up at a practice and just have a look and listen. No obligation, introduce yourself to the conductor and sit back. |
