WelcomeOur AimTo provide an opportunity for people of all ages to play a woodwind, brass or rhythm instrument in the company of others of similar ability for the joy of playing music and improving their skills as a member of a band or musical ensemble. We aim to be available for "gigs" where the bands can perform in public. We aim to provide these performances as a community service, (but we've never knocked back a donation for a performance: it helps offset the considerable costs involved) We welcome new players, even those who have no band experience (minimum
standards are set for each band). Those with little or no musical
experience are welcome in our Learners Group. We are not able to
teach individual musicians, but our conductors can usually recommend
a teacher. Players are expected to conduct their own studies
and practice. Some of our more experienced players also play with professional big bands like Zuit. We provide the practice facility, the conductor and the music (charts) and players pay a small fee (currently $80 per term) to help with costs. Some study books may be required. Players are expected to provide their own their instruments, (the Association do own some percussion equipment) Again, conductors can recommend brands, suppliers and purchase options More information? contact us HistoryRiver City Community Music Association began in 1998 with the formation of the main Concert Band. The Concert Band was a community band for adults who wanted to learn to play a musical instrument. Most people had never played before and couldn't read music. A few had played some type of instrument many years before and had some musical knowledge. River City Community Music Association now consists of five bands in which we cater for people of all ages and abilities. Practice rooms were based in schools in the Annerley area, and for a time even the Boggo Road Gaol resounded with our noises. To hire one of the bands, click here To join as a player, click here |
