Stamford RiverCare Group are pleased to announce that, as part of their RiverCare Festival Day on July 10th 2011, a children’s illustrated writing competition is to be held. The competition is open to all children in the Stamford area aged from 8 to 11years old. Entries are being invited from all local schools as well as from Stamford children who attend schools outside the area. There are two age categories, 8 to 9 and 10 to 11 years old. Prizes will be awarded in each category and all entries will receive a certificate of commendation. It is hoped that the winning entries will also be published in local magazines and newspapers. The children are asked to write either an illustrated story or an illustrated factual account of some aspects of the ecology of the River Welland and its millstreams in and around Stamford. Conservation themes should feature in the stories, for instance the problem of Himalayan Balsam destroying the natural vegetation, feeding white bread to ducks-which is not good for them, or the river running dry - as it has sometimes done recently. The entries will be judged by conservation and illustration experts and it is hoped a celebrity will present prizes and certificates on the day. Latest News (April 2011): we're sorry to announce that due to a very disappointing response, we've had to cancel this competition. However, the ideas and materials have been passed to the Environment Agency for possible inclusion in a wider River Welland competition to promote the Water Framework Directive.
