"Been a long time" meaning and development of lyrics

posted ‎‎Jul 15, 2009 10:45 AM‎‎ by Rivel Music

On my new release there is a song entitled "Been a long time".
It was an outcry about the discouraging elements of the music industry, socio-political norms and the disconnection and self-destruction of inhumane efforts.
When I first wrote the lyrics, it had a specific meaning for myself, which evolved over time.
It was at first a lament, which turned into an empowerment piece of simplistic vocal efforts.
I wrote and recorded the song in a specific tone to try and emphasize meaning over melody.
I am posting the lyrics here in case anyone would like to read or comment upon them.

Lyrics for "Been a long time":

Been to long time I got nothing done
Too many words too little action
So much wasted on bad decisions
Tell me oh what have I become
I locked tight in my room
With my preconceptions
Thinking my dreams will come soon
You think I learned my lesson

I gotta get up and make it happen
No more time for relaxin'
Makin' music for no one to hear
Is like makin' music for a deaf mans ear
That’s what I’m trying to do on this track
Trying to take the world back
To reclaim what is rightfully mine
And what many call divine

Life
Wake up and live it
No time to miss it
Life
It’s undeniable
I am reliable
Life
Wake up and live it
No time to miss it
Life
Positive movement
Its self improvement

What about human connection
Are we all in the same situation?
Have we forgotten our responsibility
To help each other, help humanity
We’ve locked our doors and shut them up tight
Thinking we're safe from unknown sight
Using guns and bombs to blow away our fears
While mentally they're near
Self-destruction has got a brand new face
One that I can't seem to place
But I’ve got the bad sensation
That we've caused our own frustration
So many lives taken by this nation
Without any explanation
Oh, so many falsities
Built on emotional fallacies

Life
Wake up and live it
No time to miss it
Life
Interconnected
Directly effected
Life
Wake up and live it
No time to miss it
Life
We shouldn't fear it
We should revere it

Hate perpetuated from both sides
Come on people open your eyes
When you shoot a gun expect to be shot
When you kill a man don't expect a whole lot
A different way of life is still life
And taking one is never right
Raising your fist against such a gift
Brothers and sisters you've got to resist
Don’t believe every word you hear
From mass media you should steer clear
For information swayed by monetary gain
Is tainted information just the same
Use your given intellect
Give love, care, respect
But the first place it should start
Is by opening your ears and hearts

Life
Wake up and live it
No time to miss it
Life
Ethnocentricity
Is not the way to be
Life
Wake up and live it
No time to miss it
Life
In actuality
It’s a duality
