Written by Rita-Marie Lawlor and Directed by Noel Farrell. The Arts Journal is a
fictional community based TV show highlighting the artistic and creative talents
of Dublin locals and surrounding areas of Leinster focusing on the show’s presenter
Zoe Carter (played by Rita-Marie Lawlor) and her companion camera operator
Graham Smith (played by Tony Murphy) Together they experience the ups and
downs of interviewing ego-maniacs, maniacs, self confessed musical geniuses and
child prodigies with their ever so super duper parents along with future film legends
(in their own back gardens like!) Episode one - 'Stranger Than Fiction' explores just
how many diverse people they meet and speak with while slowly introducing other
characters who also work at The Arts Journal. Graham and Zoe live a life that’s far
from glamorous and are sometimes overworked and underpaid in order to achieve
the ‘experience’ while continuing to grow and learn whilst surviving on a basic wage.
Since Graham’s car is out of action they walk the streets of Dublin with mini lighting and sound gear along with Graham’s precious Sony Z1 camera. Graham has worked
for many years as a wedding cameraman but applied to the community channel’s
add when they were after an experienced camera op, and he landed the job as the
show’s main camera person. Zoe has a media degree focusing on journalism and
presenting though wanted to opt for more of a production role in radio, but after
several failed attempts with interviews, she passed with flying colours to present
The Arts Journal. She likes her job and likes whom she works with, but sharing a
house with her friend - wacky art student Josie Cooper, leaves her feeling drained
to make ends meet.
Full of satire with diverse and strange characters, each episodic story is continual with Graham and Zoe’s lives. However, they are introduced with new challenges
each week and as the story progresses we learn a lot more about what they really
want from life and where it will take them next.
