Citron Gin is a pioneer of the bitbeat scene in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire. He was discovered in late 2009 by MadeinMIDI, a label devoted to the unusual in pop and his track ‘Ringtonic is its inaugural release. Gin’s work draws on the sounds in the environment that are often overlooked or considered unworthy of a musical treatment. ‘Ringtonic is an affectionate tribute to cellphone culture – the music that we hear all around us on a daily basis, particularly on public transport, but hitherto unstructured as a concentrated listening experience. The ubiquitous Nokia tune (originally a fragment from a 19th century classical guitar piece) provides the central subject of this work around which Gin weaves his own equally infectious melodies.
