Mattel Legends

Defining Moments 1

Macho Man Randy Savage

A freaking dream come true. Since Jakks classics 1 we have all been salivating at a chance to have the Macho Man in our collections. Ralph came along and customizers gave us enough to barley satiate our appetites but for some reason Jakks just couldn’t seal the deal that we all craved. Mattel did it within there first year on the job and here he is decked out in his Wrestlemania 7 gear. So technically he would be the Macho King. The Jacket is everything I could ever ask it to be. It is made of fake white leather with purple accents and white marks on it. It has silver lines on the seams of the jacket and of course his trademark frills. One thing that Mattel always seems to nail right on the head are their softs. They look great and they fit great. Not too bulky and not too tight. They included his signature cowboy hat that he began wearing in his run as the macho king. They even went as far as to include a little silver rope that goes around the highly decorated hat. He comes with sun glasses that look great and fir the first time in the history of Macho Man figures, they are removable! Oh sweet Mattel. Ok enough about accessories (sorry guys it’s the little things that get me going) on with the figure. The tights are what you would expect in a perfect match to the coat. The purple and silver deco goes right down to the boots. The head scan isn’t a perfect likeness. I mean it’s not horrible but pretty mediocre. But after years of longing I’ll take it. Others have criticized the head for being too small. I can see that, it is slightly small but this doesn’t bother me all that much. He has taped wrists, hands and fingers. The one thing that bothers me a bit is the large bicep mold. This just interferes with playability. I look forward to many more figures of the madness to come.

Entrance Greats

Shawn Michaels

I have been eyeballing this figure since I first saw him gracing the shelves of retail stores across the east coast. But the price was just a bit to high for me to indulge in, but when Target had them on sale for ten bucks I popped. He comes in full entrance gear featuring white leather pants and the multi colored mesh top that he wore at Wrestlemania XII. This figure turns out to be a bit of a disappointment. The gear looks baggy and sloppy on the figure and is sewn as one piece. HBK has a snarling head scan with his hair tied back in a pony tail which makes sense for his entrance. The tights underneath are perfect for the event decorated in black gold and silver hearts even on his knee pads. Still the figure leaves me wishing it were articulated in the Elite style. For the price of these figures there is no reason for them not to be. Personally I would rather pay for an elite style figure and loose the musical base. I mean the idea is cool, but playing a few seconds of his song isn’t worth losing the added playability. I predict that this line will fade away as Defining Moments roll out.

Undertaker

The first thing that stuck out to me when I opened this figure was the coat. It is cloth which is great but I disagree with the material choice. The coat seems to be a fake leather which is great if your using it for a current version of the Undertaker. I wish they would have given him a less shiny coat similar to what his shirt is made from. Another thing that perplexes me are his gloves. Why are they black? Shouldn’t they be grey? Or was his debut at the Survivor Series the one time when he wore black ones? The other thing I don’t like is that you can see his forearm where the hand attaches. He comes with his trademark hat but this seems to be the same mold from his Elite figure which doesn’t quite fit the head scan. Now some might call this being nitpicky but if you look at the HBK Defining Moments figure you will see that they took the Taker hat and molded it specifically for HBK, so that leads me to think there is no reason why they couldn’t have done the same here. The head scan is great. Love the throw back to the old read headed undertaker with light facial hair and zombie like eyes. He comes with a cloth shirt that is jagged as it should be and has a black singlet top underneath. They even outdid Jakks by including a removable neck tie. This is my favorite aspect about this figure. He has hard rubber boot covers that are grey. I prefer these to the cloth ones as they don’t interfere with playability and they stay put. I would prefer to have this figure in the elite style but the accessories are great and he is still fun to play with. A couple noticeable omissions include the lack of forearm tattoo and no earn.

Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase

The first thing I want to tackle here is the Million Dollar Belt. This marks Mattel’s first real belt (not counting the limited edition metal commemorative belt things they had been running) and it looks okay. I mean yeah it’s the right belt and has all the detail it needs but I can poke a few holes in it’s construction. I prefer the Jakks version and how they had the dollar signs in the front made from hard plastic painted silver, gave it a nice shine that you expect from a million bucks worth of diamonds. Mattel just did a paint job wich allows space between the $’s but is less flashy. The other thing that I dislike about this belt is the way it fastens. It fastens unlike any other title belt. It is one size and has this awkward hook. First problem is that the hook is hard to fasten and even harder to unfasten. Translation = this soft rubber will eventually break. I would have preferred a Jakks style multi size style or even the style Mattel has used on their newer belts. The fact that it is one size means it fits only one man. Now I know, It’s the million dollar belt and was meant to fit only one man, but actually some other men fit it too such as Virgil, Stone Cold (as the Ring Master), and Ted Jr. To go further, the belt was specifically fitted to fit ted when he is wearing pants, a shirt, and his coat. Now this is how he normally wore the belt so I am glad it fits him this way, but that unfortunately means if you put it on him in wrestling gear, its big enough to use as a hula-hoop! The suit looks great with the gold trim and dollar signs on the lapel. He has a gold stripe down the pants and the large dollar sign on the back. The only problem I see is that the coat doesn’t have Velcro to keep it buttoned which isn’t a problem if you have the belt on over top of it. Also due to the arms, he can’t do his signature look of holding his lapels. Under his coat he has a white dickey style tuxedo shirt with a sewn on bow tie. His pants have a sewn on golden cummerbund. It would have been neat if his pants had Velcro down the sides like he actually did to make them tear away pants. I always remember Sensational Sherrie ripping them off before his matches. The heads scan is a good likeness of Ted though I would say his hair could be a little liter. He has deco on the sides of his black trunks and his boots. Unfortunately he has those large immobilizing knee pads. Mattel please fix this!

Mattel Legends 2

Ravishing Rick Rude

This represents Rude’s first figure with his short hair. If they weren’t so damn expensive I would buy one to make a custom DX suited version. But for $15 I’ll have to wait. Lets start with the robe. The good it has a nice gold collar with specks of gold all over it. The back has a nice Simply ravishing text. My only dislike about it is that the Velcro attaches at a point that makes it fit very loose making it look like a kid wearing daddy’s robe. The head scan looks great. Just an awesome likeness for this era rude. I would rather have him with a straight face instead of the pouty lips but it looks so good that I can deal. The body is ripped and lust like I remember the ravishing one. He has his anchor tattoo and black boots with simply ravishing on them. They have white bottoms and laces. My main dislike with this figure is the tights. Just not my favorite design that he wore but I can’t hold that over there head. Unfortunately this is my first experience with sub par quality control as rude has a severely loose left thigh. I have never had a figure with such a loose part, especially right out of the package. Matty if your reading this I would gladly take a replacement.

The Ugandan Giant Kamala

This figure Win! This is one of the many gems of this set. Lets start with the accessories. He comes with a nicely detailed shield with painted designs on it. It even has a soft plastic handle on the back that is a separate piece. He has a removable mask which is much like the Jakks one only it fits perfectly unlike Jakks that had plastic that just squeezed itself on his head. Though I do wish Mattel would focus more on guys who have not had a Jakks figure. But it doesn’t stop there. He has a soft rubber neck made of garlic to ward off evil spirits. Hey I can’t blame him, I’m not a Twilight fan myself either. Then the sarong. It is the perfect length and leopard print. It is not removable and is attached some how inside the torso waist joint. I like this as it wont be able to fall off. The head scan is perfect with a great beard and tribal paint. He has a face that is so spot on that I can almost hear him moaning. He ahs a moon and stars on his front. The body is awesome to. It is big like Kamala was but unlike Jakks figure it is nice and playable due to the great articulation. The only draw back there is, and it’s a real minor one, is he didn’t come with a spear. I mean come on Mattel you did everything else. But hat doesn’t spoil it. I can make a damn spear.

Iron Sheik

Well this figure just makes you want to scream “Yo Muhamad Yo Alah Yo Ali.” Did we need Sheik in his old school short tights? Sure. Did we need Jakks to make multiple versions (3) of him in the same style trunks? Absolutely not. This was the Sheik I had dreamed of in the LJN style pants and Mattel did it with perfection! Sheiky comes in a black robe decorated with royal gold trim. He also comes with a red head dress with gold trim to match his robe. Remember the cheep days when we used to get headdresses with the band uncolored in solid white? Oh those days are gone my friends. The head scan is superb. I mean the old Jakks head was very well done but this just blows any previous attempts out of the water. As I mentioned he has his blue caprices on that are decorated with ornate paisley and oldest country in the world on the sides. No sheik figure would be complete with out pointy boots. He has Camels and sabers on both sides of each boot. They also gave him a brand new torso mold which is perfect for the sheik. Nice and sculpted with abs but big and burly with an oil drum chest. And can I just say how awesome it is to have a sheik figure that can do the camel clutch. If you like this figure please give me a “Hell ya.”

Terry Funk

Before he was middle aged he was tearing up the tag team roster with his brother Hoss in the WWF. This is how I remember the Funker at WrestleMania 2. Once again Mattel does a killer job. He has a brown hat that is decorated with a red stripe. H comes with an amazing branding iron that is two toned with a silver end featuring 2 crosses which I can only assume represent the double cross ranch from Amarillo Texas. He comes with a nice red cloth removable shirt and a great pair of chaps that are decorated with red frills. The figure features red trunks, red and black boots and black knee pads. The head scan has a good likeness and is one more figure that makes this set shine. No where to complain here either.

Jake the Snake Roberts

Holly Heals Batman. Is it me or is this set pretty much all bad guys (except snuka). It realy reminds me of the jacks BCA series called badboys wich had the first ever WWF Stone cold figure. Speaking of Stone Cold, Before Jake thumped the bible he was a double crossing sneaky slimy heal begging to be trusted. This was the Jake that wrestled in my hey day leading up to WrestleMania 8. He has black tights with red orange yellow and white flames and snake logo tights. He has snake skin boots and white wrist tape. He even has speckle chest hair deco. The head scan I have to say though is only okay at best. Something on it just looks cheap. I mean it looks decent but needs some work. They keep with the character and give him a cobra like he used during that run. Unfortunately it is way out of scale and oversized for the cobra that he carried at that time. Wish the snake was much smaller and came with a bag. Now if they made Jake a glove for snake handling that would be over the top.

Superfly Jimmy Snuka

Well here is the lone face in this set the Super Super Super Super Fly. Now although Mattel has released mostly the same figs that Jakks did they are smart in that they are doing them in different attires (example Snuka and Sheik). This version represents his later appearances where he started to wear boots. Snuka comes with a huge tiger print robe with a tie. But once you remove it the figure is all down hill. The head scan is the worst yet in Mattel’s legends line. Just a bad job. The hair is hard rubber making it hard to move and the face is doing the puckered lipped face that Snuka did when he made weird noises (if you don’t know what I mean check out the interview with Roddy’s Rowdies at the Survivor series where he does back up while the Bushwhackers and Piper sing Dem Bones while eating turkey carcasses). Next I see the torso. It is huge. Like ultimate warier huge. I know he sipped the juice back in the day but with that tiny head the giant torso just looks odd. He has tiger print tights and wrist bands with brown boots.

WWE Entrance Greats

Rowdy Roddy Piper

This marks my first purchase into the world of Entrance Greats and I have mixed thoughts on the line. Lets start with the figure. The head scan is his early career short hair cut and he comes with blue tights and maroon boots. He has short blue knee pads as well. He has a snarly look on his face reminiscent of his days as a heel. He, as all this series, is in the basic style with limited articulation. He comes with a removable kilt and “Hot Rod” shirt with red ringer trim. Now I could be wrong but if we are having a Piper of this era shouldn’t he have a non “Hot Rod” shirt or at least give him the long hair scan? He also has a belt that is completely removable (unlike jakks belt which was attached to his kilt). Lastly he comes with a soft rubber set of bag pipes. A nice little addition to the figure and it fit perfectly in his arms with the mouth piece positioned perfectly to the open part of his smirk. The last bit to look at is his supped up stand. It is the special diamond plated plastic (to look like metal) and plays music. It plays Piper’s most recent entrance them (not the classic one of Scotland the Brave). Over all the figure looks nice. My only gripe is the $20 price point. I mean it is technically a basic figure with elite clothing and a special stand. For my money I would rather have him in the legends line with an elite style body and articulation and ditch the stand. That way I would have a better figure and save $5. $20 for a basic style figure is just not palatable to me.

Sergeant Slaughter

Attention maggots! Yeah that’s right. I’m really loving this figure. I know a lot of these figures have already been released but they did a great job of giving them a fresh look. He has his classic blue tights with a white top. He has tall boots and his pants say “CORPS” down the side. The head scan is very well done and has a not so balled look as he still has enough hair to comb over. The accessories really make this figure. His hat seems a bit small but most things are compared to Jakks. He comes a great little drill sergeant’s whistle and a pair of sun glasses that fit so good. They latterly clip right on.

WWE Legends Series 1

Packaging:

To start off let me comment on the packaging. For the most part I like it. The art work is simply amazing. Very reminiscent of the LJN packaging only with a bit more class. Unfortunately the packaging is the same as the basic figure packaging. It is not resalable like the elite figures even though they are built, packaged, and priced like elites. Personally I would have liked real photographs like the Hasbro style but since I’m not a MOC guy I won’t complain.

The American Dream Dusty Rhodes

Let’s start with the head scan shall we. In the language of the dream. The head scan is pretty city (speak it like the dream and you may get that). Just an ugly head. Really bad. That being said the body style is superb. Good playability especially for a big guy. The legs have a bit less flexibility but that should be expected. He still has all the articulation points that an elite style figure has but they just don’t’ all work as well. In addition to a new body mold he also has new cowboy style boots mold. They follow the Mattel tradition of great detail. Now the accessories. They are very nice. He comes with one elbow pad and two knee pads. They are nice and flexible and feature polka dots. He also comes with a hard plastic removable head band and a tank top. It has Velcro up the back.

Stone Cold Steve Austin

The Texas Rattle Snake gets his second Mattel figure only better because it is elite. He has a nasty scowl. His gear is the classic black tights of Austin with short boots and all black wrist tape and tights. He comes with nice flexible knee pads and a great knee brace. This one is far superior to Jakks two versions since they fit and will never fall off. See when Jakks made theirs they had two versions. The first was a sold mold and was made for TTL style figures. The second better version had a hinge and was made for R3 style figures. Problem was that line died young and they used the brace on RA figures. Well as you all know RA figures have fat legs. So something made for an R3 leg didn’t have a chance. So that was a long way of saying the knee brace looks awesome. His leg features his Texas tattoo. He comes with a rubber vest that features a skull, 3:16 and Austin on the front. The back has the 3 skull logo all in silver. I am not 100% alcohol fueled here but the back of the vest looks like it is missing something. The rubber isn’t great but it is easier than the Jakks version to remove. He comes with an alternate t-shirt with the Austin 3:16 logo on it. It unfortunately is missing the back logo. This is probably because of the Velcro.

Ricky The Dragon Steamboat

The accomplishment Jakks claimed to never be able to seal comes to us in Mattel’s first line of legends. Unfortunately I am slightly disappointed. The main reason is his “superstar scale.” It just makes him much shorter than his other Matty counterparts. And if you are thinking of interacting him with your custom RA style Macho Man then Ricky will come up short. So he just doesn’t hold up well with my Jakks figures. Next complaint comes to the head scan. Now I must say that it looks more like Steamboat in person that it did in the proto pictures. My only compliant about it is the molded on headband that dangles in the back. The reason why I don’t like this is that he didn’t always wear the band and it can easily break off. The red gee is amazing. It comes with a removable belt and features a detailed dragon logo on the left arm and his initials. He has molded on red tights and boots with detailed dragon deco. Another little complaint is that they failed to add that band that he used to tie around his knee. Lastly the dragon. Ok props to Mattel for remembering this little addition and cool that they thought to give it a tie around its mouth for ring safety and the customer service to not make it monochromatic. Problem is, it’s a crocodile or an alligator. Not a Komodo dragon. All flaws considered it’s nice to have the dragon with possible limbs.

Road Warriors

Hawk and Animal

Since they are so similar I will do this team together. Since it stands out as much as it does lets take a look at the gear. Oh my lord did they blow this out of the water. Those pads are a work of art. Nice stud design and the layering is just amazing. I mean it has all the padding layers that real football pads have. Even down to the side straps. Only problem is that these are clearly a display item not great for play. It takes a lot longer to remove them then the ones made in the past. They even went as far as to include the forearm guards. Simply beautiful pieces but once again they are though to take off and put on, especially since Animal’s forearms are a bit bigger. Both have black tights with Warriors written in red down the legs. Hawk has old school black and blue face paint with his reverse Mohawk and mustache. He is taller and slimmer than animal and is great for doing a killer reverse neck breaker. Animal has his the dark age green and black face paint with his full beard and Mohawk. He works great with elite figures do put on a doomsday device with his partner. He is bulkier in the muscle department and shorter than hawk. They each have kick pad boots.

Lastly just a few shots to show scale.
