Kiwi Connection - Ruma 8 - Year 5 & 6

Dear Families,

It is with regret that I must announce that I will no longer be teaching Ruma 8 from the end of Term 2, 2009. As many of you are already aware, I have applied for an English teaching position in Japan. I received the news that I have been short-listed yesterday, and have tendered my resignation to the board.
I would like to thank you all for all of the support I have received over the past 2 ½ years. We have a wonderful school and a wonderful community here, and I will be very sorry to leave in many ways.
My position will be advertised shortly, and I will let you all know as soon as a suitable replacement has been found. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,
Ben Wills

Dear Families,

Welcome (back) to Ruma 8! We have a long and busy year ahead of us and I’d like to take this opportunity to go over some of the events and topics for Term one.

First off, Camp. This will be at Totara Springs (as it was in 2007) from March 16-20. Most camp forms have already been returned, but if you haven’t returned your child’s medical form, please let me know. Children not attending camp are still expected to attend school and will be placed into a composite class for the duration. If you have any questions about camp, please direct them either to Nerra Lealiifano or myself.

Swimming has begun and will be every Thursday from 10:40-12 at Youthtown. The cost for lessons is $40, and there will be an opportunity for further lessons when the weather warms up once more in Term Four.

Besides camp, our main topic for the beginning of the year will be “Our Cultures”, a study of cultures from around the globe. We will be studying different peoples, discussing similarities and differences and sharing our findings. This will culminate with a sharing session/shared lunch on Friday 6/3/09, when class members will have an opportunity to show what they have learned.

Homework in Ruma 8 is generally topic related, with assignments (usually revolving around research, and occasionally presentations) lasting from one to three weeks. Children are also expected to learn a list of spelling words every week, to be tested on Thursday mornings.

Just a couple of reminders before I sign off:

·      Hats, hats, hats! With a vast expanse of depleted ozone layer hanging over us, your child is at risk! Armour them against the depredations of the almighty sun!

·      Our first goal setting interviews will be held in week nine, on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd of April. I look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions about the above, please get in touch with me ASAP.

Wishing you a great summer term,

Ben Wills

HOMEWORK

Now that we are back from camp and once more into the swing of things, it's time for school as normal - including homework! To save on paper and make "I lost it" an invalid excuse, I will be uploading the homework for each week to this website. Simply open the attachments below to find out what your child is doing this week.
