Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was born in Virginia. He graduated second in his class at West Point in 1829. He served in the United States military for 23 years until secessionist discussion forced him to choose between his Whig, American loyalties and his loyalty to Virginia. On April 23, 1861, after declining the field command of the United States army, Lee accepted the command of the Virginia forces (part of the Confederate army). He surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War. After the war, he was indicted for treason but never brought to trial. He died in Lexington, VA on October 12, 1870.Information and picture from http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ug97 ...
