Twitter

How to Twitter (tips courtesy of Fred Benenson, Creative Commons Outreach Manager)

  • Links on microblogs are tricky things as they can take up a lot (if not all) of your 140 characters. You want to use a URL shortener.
  • A good one is http://bit.ly as they track click statistics.
  • Consider adding a bookmarklet to your browser window to automatically shorten links, or install bit.ly's firefox extension.

  • One of the main ways news travels through twitter is by the retweet (RT). This merely means someone liked what you said and wants to repost it.
  • It is good if you leave enough space for others to easily retweet you.
  • Be conversational. Twitter is not about just announcing links. Reply to others, answer questions and be amenable.
  • Follow people that pose good questions or post good content
  • When possible and easy, reference other users accounts using @ instead of just saying the name
