Student Rotation

The Regions Toxicology Service accepts medical, physician assistant, and pharmacy rotation students. Carson Harris, MD and Kristin Engebretsen, PharmD have served as preceptors for many years and are committed to educating future practitioners in emergency medicine and toxicology. While on rotation, students will develop an understanding of the principles of critical care as well as the fundamentals of Clinical Toxicology. Content will include the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and management of common and serious emergency poisonings and exposures.

Objectives
Upon completion of the rotation students will be expected to:
1. Conduct an initial history and physical examination of emergency department patients with toxic presentations.
2. Recommend initial and subsequent therapies for the management of toxicology patients.
3. Be familiar with techniques used in the management of poisoned patients, specifically gastrointestinal decontamination, antidote use, hemodialysis and hemoperfusion, and acid/base management.
4. Concisely present cases to the toxicology team and develop a differential diagnosis.
5. Be familiar with the Micromedex database, pertinent medical literature, and text material on emergency medicine and toxicology

Toxicology Rounds
Students will begin each morning by screening the daily admissions list from the ED for toxicology related cases. The student will present the case in a systematic manner to the toxicology team. The team will use each case to illustrate their approach to assessment and treatment. For hospital admits, the team will round on patients to gather information and conduct an assessment. Students may also be asked to write consult notes.

Poison Center
The student will be oriented to the operation of the Hennepin Regional Poison Center, use of Poisindex, and other services used for disseminating poison information and treatment advice. Students will observe the Poison Information Specialists at the poison center. They will also participate in scheduled case conferences, journal club, and didactic meetings presented at the poison center.

Core lecture series
A member of the toxicology team will deliver interactive lectures on common toxicology topics. The lectures are delivered by staff or fellows and may include the topics listed below.

Pre-test and Post-test
A pre-test is given at the beginning of the rotation to help the student and staff define areas that need improvement. The post-test will consist of 40 questions and cases covering the core content of clinical toxicology.

Weekly Journal Club
Journal Club is held every week for faculty members, fellows, and rotating residents and students. Journal articles pertaining to poisoning emergencies and toxic exposures are presented and discussed.

Herbal Consults (pharmacy students)
Herbal consults are generated for admitted patients who take any herbal or natural products. Pharmacy students are asked to speak to the patient and conduct a review of outpatient and inpatient medications. Students will check for safety, efficacy, and interactions before making a recommendation for future herbal use.

Conferences
Students are expected to attend:
  • Weekly Emergency Medicine Conference
  • Toxicology Grand Rounds
  • Medical Examiner's Conference
  • Toxicology Journal Club
