Using Data and Making Predictions

3rd Grade Math ~ Ms. Reed

Dear Parents:

Next week we are going to be starting our math unit on Using Data and Making Predictions.  We are going to be talking about using maps, using data to make predictions, collecting and analyzing data, investigating probability, and interpreting and working with data, and making graphs.  My expectations for the end of this unit are that students will be able to gather data from various sources, use data to make predictions and test those predictions, be able to make a bar graph and a line plot, and will also understand some ways in which people use math in their everyday lives.  Because of this last expectation, I am going to be sending home a homework assignment for your children to talk with you about some ways that you use math.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach me by e-mail at reedl@seattleu.edu or on Amy Jones’s classroom phone, 831 – 4028.

These are some helpful links to websites that can be used to supplement this unit and help math understanding in general.

http://www.cdli.ca/CITE/maps.htm  - This is a Canadian website with links to many different maps, including maps of the United States and Washington.  It is a good introduction to looking at different kinds of maps with your student.

http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html - The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives has many online math tools that your student can use to explore data, graphing, and more!

http://www.edbydesign.com/automath.html - This website has lots of math games that can help students practice basic math skills or improve newer skills.  Just click on "Math Games" on the sidebar in the lower left-hand side of the screen.
