-Work on papermaking.  Keep in mind sampler requirements:

Sampler A

All samples should fit into the 8 ½ x 11 clear plastic sleeves of your 3-ring binder.  Label your sleeves as to the specific technique used. You will need to make several sheets of paper in each technique in order to “master” the process. All samples should be a representation of your best work and therefore you should work on evenness, consistency, and experimentation and not be satisfied with your first try.  You will be expected to show that you are trying new things, and getting an accumulation of work that will be used for the future bookbinding assignment.  So SAVE YOUR WORK!

1)     Sample 1 will be embedded foliage, flowers, etc.

2)     Sample 2 will be your choice of the following embedded processes:

a.      Revealing an image

b.      Color strips/designs

3)     Sample 3 will be laminating color.

Each sample is worth 10 points, for a total of 30 points.

Samplers are due in the binder Fri. December 5th.

It is really important that you are creating enough paper to make several book binding assignments, as well as enough paper for your final project.  Be creative.  Make some pulp at home with fabric, recycled paper, labels, etc.  You may use the abaca and cotton pulps at any time, but keep in mind you may have to share the vats.  Therefore you may want to bring in your own vats to keep your work separate.  Vats should have lids on them.

Thursday 12/4

Work on papermaking

Friday 12/5

-Paper samplers due today (see above)

-Final project sketches & plan due today. (see attached)

-Demo on bookbinding  (binding samplers due on Monday, may be homework):

2)     Sample 2 will be a 5 hole, outside Pamphlet stitch technique.

3)     Sample 3 will be with a pressed board cover, using the Stab Binding technique.

4)     Sample 4 will be a 3-Dimensional, pop out page book with your choice of binding.

Each sample is worth 10 points, for a total of 40 points.   Bookbinding samplers are due Monday, December 8thd.

Assignments 8/18-8/22

posted Aug 13, 2008 5:11 PM by Charity Recla   [ updated Aug 25, 2008 4:13 PM ]

-Start Portfolio Name Design planning.  In your sketchbook, create 20 (2”x2”) thumbnail (quick) sketches of your name.  10 of the boxes should be in a geometric style, and the other 10 boxes should be in an organic style.  Create your own letter designs/fonts and letter layout. Be creative & put your letters together in unique ways.  Fill the space within the picture plane (square) from top to bottom, side to side, and off the page.  Show a good balance of positive and negative shape/space.  20 designs are DUE MONDAY 8/18.

Monday 8/18/08

-Have your 20 designs finished when you come to class.  Each person should date the next page in their sketchbook and title it “Group Critique-20 Thumbnails.”  Each artist should take notes here on the group’s responses to the following questions.

-  Each person will get 3 minutes to show their 20 thumbnail designs to the group. In the 3 minutes, the group will discuss:

1)  Which designs are the most successful at filling the space and why? Ie: do they go off the picture plane; size; space; etc.

2)  Discuss which designs are the most effective in balancing the positive and negative space/shapes and why?

3)  Which designs are the most creative and why?

4)  With the help of your group, star the 4 overall, strongest designs/fonts.  Explain why the group selected these 4 as the top choices.

5)  With the help of your group, answer how each of the 4 designs could be made stronger and more effective as a design?

After the group assignment, students will independently re-work the best designs into 4 2inx2in inch boxes. It could be that you will be combining ideas, making the design larger, neater, changing the direction, balancing the space better, changing the font, thickness of the letters, etc.  You should use color pencil or black sharpee to work out a color scheme that enhances your design and the color of your poster boards.  4 designs are DUE WEDNESDAY 8/20.

Wednesday 8/20/08

Printmaking Artist Quote Discussion Share with the group, your opinion of what the artists quote could mean.  In your sketchbook next to the quote, write down any additional thoughts you might have in regards to the quote’s meaning.  Be prepared to share with the class.

Printmaking Critique Group Directions-Wednesday 8/20/08

Each person should date the next page in their sketchbook and title it “Group Critique-4 Rough Drafts.”  Each artist should take notes in their sketchbook on the group’s responses to the following questions.

-  Each person will get 5 minutes to show their 4 Rough Draft designs to the group. In the 5 minutes, the group will answer these questions in their sketchbooks:

1)  Which 1 design is the most successful at filling the space and why? Ie: does it go off the picture plane; size; space; etc.

2)  Discuss which design is the most effective in balancing the positive and negative space/shapes and why?

3)  Which design is the most creative and why?

4) With the help of your group, select the overall most successful design out of the 4? Star it.

6)  Do you agree with the group’s decision on your most successful design?  Why or why not?

7) With the help of your group, answer how your final design could be made stronger and more effective as a final work of art?

After the group assignment, students will independently re-work the best design in a 2x2 inch box. This could be that you will combine ideas from the 4 designs, make the design/fonts larger or smaller, neater, changing the direction, balancing the space better, changing the font, thickness of the letters, etc.  You MUST ACCURATELY DRAW THE 2x2 inch BOX, AND USE DRAWING TOOLS TO MAKE SURE EDGES ARE STRAIGHT AND EVEN.  YOU MAY TRACE CURVED OBJECTS TO HELP YOU WITH THE CURVES OR MAKE SURE THEY ARE NEATLY DRAWN.  You should color in your work with your sharpee.  Color in the area which you want the stamped to be inked on.  FINAL 2x2 DESIGN is DUE Tomorrow 8/21

Thursday 8/21

When you are finished with your final design, see Mrs. Recla. She will double check your design, give you tracing paper, and get you started on tracing your design to stamping foam. You will trace your design on the paper side of your foam.  See Mrs. Recla for an exacto knife to cut out your designs. Cut neatly with no “tags.”  Trace your designs BACKWARDS onto your wooden block.  Cut out and stick the foam pieces to the block to replicate your original design.

Friday 8/22/08

There will be a demo on relief printing techniques today. Students will create a sampler of their stamp design to be placed in their binder and graded.

Sampler Due Monday 8/25/08 End of class:  Must show an even consistency of ink, and stamping in an orderly fashion. Turn your stamp in different directions to print, but keep it in an orderly pattern.  Put in plastic sleeves in binder.
