Monday 9/8
-Bellwork:  Write down artist uote in your sketchbook
-Finish partner drawing
-Pick up handout on ellipses. Read and start making the diagram of ellipses in your sketchbook.
-Draw the cup on your desk using the concept of the ellipse.  Notice what eye level you are looking at the cup, and the size/view of the ellipses that you will need to illustrate to make your cup look accurate.
-Begin sketchbook checks

Tuesday 9/9
-Review ellipses, observational drawing/object size relationships, etc.
-Overview on viewfinders & zooming in on objects/marking spots, etc; drawing still life, including sitting still; contour lines; composition, etc.
-Students should finish up ellipse drawing of cups.
-Cut out viewfinders
-Start still life. Use drawing boards and face the still life.Do a contour line drawing in your sketchbook, which shows some reference to interior detail.  Think about balancing positive & negative shapes/space, and not having a lot of negative space when selecting a composition.  Fill the space in your sketchbook. Think of the top of the hole in the viewfinder as the top of your sketchbook 7 vice versa with the bottom.  The sides of the hole in the viewfinder are the sides of your sketchbook. Therefore, whatever objects are cut off, should go off the page of your sketchbook. Again draw what you see rather than squeezing everything in or out of the composition.  Draw what you see. Look at the height and width of objects in comparison to each other.  Try to draw in proportion.  Reflect back to the observation drawing assignments and the ellipse handout to strive for accuracy of the placement and shapes of the objects. Look at the subtle details of the shapes and positions.  Look for the foreground, middle, & backgrounds, and overlap objects to show a sense of space & depth.   When finished with one composition, move on to another in another spot.  Students will have at least 3 different contour line drawings in their sketchbook done by Friday.  See attachment for list of sketchbook assignments.

Wednesday 9/10 - Thursday, 9/11
Continue work on still life.  Do a minimum of 3 different compositions.  Work on filling space and marking viewfinder to help. See hints & criteria in 9/9 entry.

Friday 9/12
-Finish the 5 contour line drawings in your sketchbook.
-Today we are focusing on lighting and values.
-Students will take a piece of newsprint paper, drawing board, and a piece of charcoal.  They are to fold the newsprint in half and use their viewfinder to draw a composition. Fill the space of the paper.  Notice the lighting and shade the objects according to the light source.  When finished with the first view, fold the paper over and do a second view.  I am looking for a smooth transition of values from light to dark, that are accurate according to the light source. I am also looking for you to improve your drawing skills on the subject matter. Remember your observations skills discussed on 9/9.

Monday 9/15 & Tuesday 9/16
-Work on the 2nd charcoal drawing.  Focus on accuracy of drawing objects in relationship and in proportion to each other.  Work on ellipses, and shade according to the light source.
-Once you have double checked the accuracy or drawing on your 2 charcoal drawings, and 3 contour lines drawings in your sketchbook, see me.  Make adjustments to show me you are looking at the objects, and correcting them.
-Upon approval, select a view (may be one you did before but need to re-work, or a new view) from the still life. Be sure you are using your viewfinder to find a composition that fills the space, balances positive & negative space/shapes, and goes off the page.  Draw this view on the black paper using only pencil.  You should be thinking about contour lines, placement of objects, proportion, object size relationships, ellipses, etc.  DO NOT COLOR OR SHADE IN YOUR WORK.  See me when you are finished for approval to apply glue.

Wednesday  9/17
Gel Glue Apllication Demo.  All students should be drawing on black paper.  Remember to use pencil and do not color in. Clean up eraser marks and excess lines.  Upon approval, apply gel glue over the lines.  Pay attention to line weight.  Vary the thickness & thinness of lines to give a sense of visual weight.  Be careful applying glue to not over saturate, or smear.  Lay flat to dry over night.  Be sure your name is on your work in pencil.  If you are done before the end of the period & are waiting for your glue to dry, you may use the time in class to catch up on work for this class or another. ALL GLUEING MUST BE DONE BY FRIDAY.

Thursday 9/18
Overview of Focal Points using Warm vs. Cool colors.  Powerpoint of Composition & focal points.   Warm colors:  yellow, orange, red, red-violet.  Cool colors:  blue, green, blue violet.  Neutral colors:  white, brown, greys.  Review shading according to a light source.  Overview of using chalk pastels, including using the black paper to create the shadows and dark areas.  Using Black pastel is NOT permitted. Use the black of the paper & allow it to show through the chalk for darker areas.  Apply color ONLY when glue has dried.

Monday 9/22
Critique Day.

Friday 9/19-Wed. 9/24
Students should be working on having a focal point of 1-2 grouping of objects in either a warm or cool color comination.  The rest of the composition should be in the opposite.  Neutral colors should only be used as accents.  PROJECTS DUE WEDNESDAY 9/24.  Grading criteria:
-Composition fills the page with a good balance of positive & negative space/shape.
-Objects are in proportion and are drawn correctly in relationship to each other.
-Drawing has either a warm or cool focal area, with the rest of the drawing colored in the opposite.
-Objects are colored with a light source in mind. Show a large range of values with smooth transitions.  Black paper shows through for the shadowed areas.
-Neatness
-Effort & Time on Task
