Monday 8/18/08
-Bellwork:  Write down and date art quote of the week in your sketchbook.  Write down a possible meaning or explanation of the quote.
-Have your 20 designs finished when you come to class.  Students will get into critiquing groups of 5 to discuss the designs.   Critique Group Directions:

Each person should date the next page in their sketchbook and title it “Group Critique-20 Thumbnails.”  Each artist should take notes here on the group’s responses to the following questions.

-  Each person will get 3 minutes to show their 20 thumbnail designs to the group. In the 3 minutes, the group will:

1)  Which designs are the most successful at filling the space and why? Ie: do they go off the picture plane; size; space; etc.

2)  Discuss which designs are the most effective in balancing the positive and negative space/shapes and why?

3)  Which designs are the most creative and why?

4)  With the help of your group, star the 4 overall, strongest designs/fonts.  Explain why the group selected these 4 as the top choices.

5)  With the help of your group, answer how each of the 4 designs could be made stronger and more effective as a design?

After the group assignment, students will independently re-work the 4 best designs in a 4x4inch box. This could be that you will be combining ideas, making the design larger, neater, changing the direction, balancing the space better, changing the font, thickness of the letters, etc.  You should use color pencil to work out a color scheme that enhances your design and the color of your poster boards.  4 designs are DUE WEDNESDAY 8/20.

Wednesday 8/20/08

 Artist Quote Discussion

Share with the group, your opinion of what the artists quote could mean.  In your sketchbook next to the quote, write down any additional thoughts you might have in regards to the quote’s meaning.  Be prepared to share with the class.

Critique Group Directions-Wednesday 8/20/08

Each person should date the next page in their sketchbook and title it “Group Critique-4 Rough Drafts.”  Each artist should take notes in their sketchbook on the group’s responses to the following questions.

-  Each person will get 5 minutes to show their 4 Rough Draft designs to the group. In the 5 minutes, the group will answer these questions in their sketchbooks:

1)  Which 1 design is the most successful at filling the space and why? Ie: does it go off the picture plane; size; space; etc.

2)  Discuss which design is the most effective in balancing the positive and negative space/shapes and why?

3)  Which design is the most creative and why?

4)  Share with the group your color scheme ideas and the color of your poster board.  Write down some of the feedback from your group.

5)  With the help of your group, select the overall most successful design out of the 4? Star it.

6)  Do you agree with the group’s decision on your most successful design?  Why or why not?

7) With the help of your group, answer how your final design could be made stronger and more effective as a final work of art, include ideas about color?

After the group assignment, students will independently re-work the best design in a 10x10 inch box. (Use classroom paper). This could be that you will combine ideas from the 4 designs, make the design/fonts larger or smaller, neater, changing the direction, balancing the space better, changing the font, thickness of the letters, etc.  You MUST ACCURATELY DRAW THE 10X10 BOX, AND USE DRAWING TOOLS TO MAKE SURE EDGES ARE STRAIGHT AND EVEN.  YOU MAY TRACE CURVED OBJECTS TO HELP YOU WITH THE CURVES OR MAKE SURE THEY ARE NEATLY DRAWN.  You should NOT color in your work.  However, make a note as to what color scheme you are going to use.  FINAL 10x10 DESIGN (uncolored) is DUE FRIDAY 8/22.

Friday 8/22/08

Final design must be ready to be transferred when you come to class.  Upon approval, students will trace their design onto vellum paper.  There will be a handout and demo on color pencil techniques (shading, crosshatching, & burnishing), and value today.  Students will then practice color pencil techniques in a sketchbook.  They will draw a sphere, cone, and cylinder and shade them using one of the techniques. The forms must show 3-dimensionality through the use of shading according to a lightsource in the upper left corner. Students must show an even and neat transition of light to dark values that illustrate a consistent light source.  Upon approval, students may start color pencil application on their final vellum drawings.  Students may want to practice color pencil on their 10x10 in. drawings before going on to the vellum.  Fully colored vellum drawings DUE FRIDAY 8/29/08
