Monday 12/1
-Powerpoint on Texture & Space & linoleum block printing. (see attached) Take notes.
-Intro to linoleum block print assignment:
In your sketchbook, measure out a 4inch x 6inch box. Draw a Stylized picture (can be realistic or abstract) that shows 4 different types of textures. Your picture should also show a sense of space, by having overlapped, through size variation, position (high/low), or a combination. Fill your space by going out of the rectangle. Drawing must be 100% completed by your arrival in class on Wednesday, December 3rd.
Remember you are going to be cutting pieces out, so watch how small you make parts of the picture. Think about what areas will be cut out, and what will be left. The areas left will be the areas that will be inked and printed. Think about how a rubber stamp looks & works. NO LETTERING/NUMBERS. What you draw will be printed out opposite.
-Students may use the rest of the class to work on gargoyle or to start their drawing.
Tuesday 12/2
-Reading in Exploring Visual Design text. Complete worksheet to coincide with reading. (see attached) Drawing Due tomorrow when you enter class. Homework tonight if you are not done.
-Rest of the class period should be used to finish gargoyle (make sure there are holes to the outside & your name is on it.) or students can work on 4x6 inch drawings for linos.
Wednesday 12/3
Using tracing paper, trace your picture. Be aware of areas that will be cut out and areas that your want to leave uncut for printing. This should take only a few minutes of class.
-On the back of your tracing paper, color over all of the lines with the side of your lead pencil until you have a thick coverage of lead that will be used for transferring your image. This will take only a few minutes of class.
-Tape your tracing paper over your linoleum so that your image will stay in place. Using a ball point pen, and pushing hard, trace over the drawing. Make sure that the image is being imprinted on the linoleum. You must have your image completely traced onto the linoleum for Thursday’s class. Bring home if necessary.
Thursday 12/4
1) Ask students what it means by relief printing. Have students give examples. Review and discuss the concept of relief printing and in general how it works.
The most common example is a rubber stamp. Ask students how a stamp works.
2) Explain: just as a rubber stamp has raised areas, we need to have raised areas in our linoleum block so that we can ink it. Show brayer and student example.
3) Today we are going to carve away any unwanted areas of the linoleum. Any areas that we do not want to have ink are going to be carved away. The raised areas are going to receive ink to print our image. The cut away areas will show the white of the paper.
4) Explain the carving supplies needed:
a. Safety board. Illustrate how the edge fits flush onto the side of the desk. Explain how it should never be positioned sideways, as it may slip causing an injury.
i. Explain that the wood piece on top of the board is used to stop any slips of the cutter. (demonstrate) The linoleum block/plate should stay flush with the wooden piece across the top. Linoleum should never be sideways, as it could slip or fold, causing an injury.
b. Cutter handle. Take the back of the handle off to show where the cutters/blades are stored. Put the cap back & illustrate how the design is meant to fit in the palm of your hand. You have the best positioning to cut using this method. (demonstrate)
i. Show students how to unscrew the metal pieces and change the cutters/blades. Curved ends of blades fit between the metal ball & the metal chip. Screw on to tighten.
c. Cutters/Blades. 4 different types for different techniques:
-Small V cutter-good for fine detail, & thin lines & textures. (use this cutter the least and save until the end for small details)
-Large V cutter-good for larger, deeper, defined lines & textures.
-Large square cutter-good for subtracting large areas with very defined edges.
-Large U cutter-good for subtracting large areas with less defined or softer edges.
i. Demonstrate each cutter/blade on a piece of practice linoleum. Discuss types of textures.
5) Safety Demonstration.
a. Always use a safety board when carving.
b. Position the hand you are not carving with behind the cutter when holding the linoleum plate.
c. Always carve away from you.
d. Turn your linoleum plate as needed to cut various areas & angles. Do not angle the linoleum as it will slip or fold. Position your safety board and body to help get hard to carve areas.
e. Report all cuts and scrapes to teacher asap. Blade will need to be changed and cuts need to be sterilized.
f. Report any broken or dull blades to asap. Dull blades cause injuries.
g. Store all cutters/blades inside the handle at the end of class.
Friday 12/5
-Students should work on carving their linoleum blocks. Due 12/11

Monday 9/8
-Bellwork: Write down artist uote in your sketchbook
-Finish partner drawing
-Pick up handout on ellipses. Read and start making the diagram of ellipses in your sketchbook.
-Draw the cup on your desk using the concept of the ellipse. Notice what eye level you are looking at the cup, and the size/view of the ellipses that you will need to illustrate to make your cup look accurate.
-Begin sketchbook checks
Tuesday 9/9
-Review ellipses, observational drawing/object size relationships, etc.
-Overview on viewfinders & zooming in on objects/marking spots, etc; drawing still life, including sitting still; contour lines; composition, etc.
-Students should finish up ellipse drawing of cups.
-Cut out viewfinders
-Start still life. Use drawing boards and face the still life.Do a contour line drawing in your sketchbook, which shows some reference to interior detail. Think about balancing positive & negative shapes/space, and not having a lot of negative space when selecting a composition. Fill the space in your sketchbook. Think of the top of the hole in the viewfinder as the top of your sketchbook 7 vice versa with the bottom. The sides of the hole in the viewfinder are the sides of your sketchbook. Therefore, whatever objects are cut off, should go off the page of your sketchbook. Again draw what you see rather than squeezing everything in or out of the composition. Draw what you see. Look at the height and width of objects in comparison to each other. Try to draw in proportion. Reflect back to the observation drawing assignments and the ellipse handout to strive for accuracy of the placement and shapes of the objects. Look at the subtle details of the shapes and positions. Look for the foreground, middle, & backgrounds, and overlap objects to show a sense of space & depth. When finished with one composition, move on to another in another spot. Students will have at least 3 different contour line drawings in their sketchbook done by Friday. See attachment for list of sketchbook assignments.
Wednesday 9/10 - Thursday, 9/11
Continue work on still life. Do a minimum of 3 different compositions. Work on filling space and marking viewfinder to help. See hints & criteria in 9/9 entry.
Friday 9/12
-Finish the 5 contour line drawings in your sketchbook.
-Today we are focusing on lighting and values.
-Students will take a piece of newsprint paper, drawing board, and a piece of charcoal. They are to fold the newsprint in half and use their viewfinder to draw a composition. Fill the space of the paper. Notice the lighting and shade the objects according to the light source. When finished with the first view, fold the paper over and do a second view. I am looking for a smooth transition of values from light to dark, that are accurate according to the light source. I am also looking for you to improve your drawing skills on the subject matter. Remember your observations skills discussed on 9/9.
Monday 9/15 & Tuesday 9/16
-Work on the 2nd charcoal drawing. Focus on accuracy of drawing objects in relationship and in proportion to each other. Work on ellipses, and shade according to the light source.
-Once you have double checked the accuracy or drawing on your 2 charcoal drawings, and 3 contour lines drawings in your sketchbook, see me. Make adjustments to show me you are looking at the objects, and correcting them.
-Upon approval, select a view (may be one you did before but need to re-work, or a new view) from the still life. Be sure you are using your viewfinder to find a composition that fills the space, balances positive & negative space/shapes, and goes off the page. Draw this view on the black paper using only pencil. You should be thinking about contour lines, placement of objects, proportion, object size relationships, ellipses, etc. DO NOT COLOR OR SHADE IN YOUR WORK. See me when you are finished for approval to apply glue.
Wednesday 9/17
Gel Glue Apllication Demo. All students should be drawing on black paper. Remember to use pencil and do not color in. Clean up eraser marks and excess lines. Upon approval, apply gel glue over the lines. Pay attention to line weight. Vary the thickness & thinness of lines to give a sense of visual weight. Be careful applying glue to not over saturate, or smear. Lay flat to dry over night. Be sure your name is on your work in pencil. If you are done before the end of the period & are waiting for your glue to dry, you may use the time in class to catch up on work for this class or another. ALL GLUEING MUST BE DONE BY FRIDAY.
Thursday 9/18
Overview of Focal Points using Warm vs. Cool colors. Powerpoint of Composition & focal points. Warm colors: yellow, orange, red, red-violet. Cool colors: blue, green, blue violet. Neutral colors: white, brown, greys. Review shading according to a light source. Overview of using chalk pastels, including using the black paper to create the shadows and dark areas. Using Black pastel is NOT permitted. Use the black of the paper & allow it to show through the chalk for darker areas. Apply color ONLY when glue has dried.
Monday 9/22
Critique Day.
Friday 9/19-Wed. 9/24
Students should be working on having a focal point of 1-2 grouping of objects in either a warm or cool color comination. The rest of the composition should be in the opposite. Neutral colors should only be used as accents. PROJECTS DUE WEDNESDAY 9/24. Grading criteria:
-Composition fills the page with a good balance of positive & negative space/shape.
-Objects are in proportion and are drawn correctly in relationship to each other.
-Drawing has either a warm or cool focal area, with the rest of the drawing colored in the opposite.
-Objects are colored with a light source in mind. Show a large range of values with smooth transitions. Black paper shows through for the shadowed areas.
-Neatness
-Effort & Time on Task

Tuesday 9/2
-Demo on upside down man. This is an exercise in drawing what you see (lines), and not what you think something should look like. Hold the drawing xerox of the man upside down. Cover all but an inch. In your sketchbook, draw everything in that inch. Translate and plan your space so that you are being accurate and not drawing too large or small. When you are done with the inch, move the cover down 1 more inch, and continue to do so until you finish the entire drawing.
-Finish portfolios
Wednesday 9/3
-Bellwork: write down artist quote.
-In the green Exploring Visual Design text, read pgs: 10-18, 20-28 on Line. In your sketchbook, answer questions 1-4 from pg, 31.
-Finish Upside-down man.
-Review questions.
-Do a series (min. 3) different poses of your hand using contour lines.1 Must be a blind contour drawing.
Thursday 9/4
-Review and powerpoint on Line
-Finish contour line drawings of your hand & blind contour of your hand. Describe the shape/form of your hand. Contour lines give us an idea of the interior detail without making it extremely detailed. Ex: lines in hands, bone structure, nails, tendons, etc. The blond contour is done by putting your hand behind you. You are looking at your hand not your sketchbook. You must draw what you see and try to transfer your observation of the shape of your hand to your paper. No peeking! This will help you to become a better observer and helps hand eye coordination.
Friday 9/5
-Draw your table mate using contour lines. You must take turns drawing each other. Draw from head to toe. Fill the space in your sketchbook. Try to draw in proportion. Consider folds in clothing. Model must sit still while posing. Focus on using observation skills, size relationships, and proportions. See handout.

Each person should date the next page in their sketchbook and title it “Group Critique-20 Thumbnails.” Each artist should take notes here on the group’s responses to the following questions.
- Each person will get 3 minutes to show their 20 thumbnail designs to the group. In the 3 minutes, the group will:
1) Which designs are the most successful at filling the space and why? Ie: do they go off the picture plane; size; space; etc.
2) Discuss which designs are the most effective in balancing the positive and negative space/shapes and why?
3) Which designs are the most creative and why?
4) With the help of your group, star the 4 overall, strongest designs/fonts. Explain why the group selected these 4 as the top choices.
5) With the help of your group, answer how each of the 4 designs could be made stronger and more effective as a design?
After the group assignment, students will independently re-work the 4 best designs in a 4x4inch box. This could be that you will be combining ideas, making the design larger, neater, changing the direction, balancing the space better, changing the font, thickness of the letters, etc. You should use color pencil to work out a color scheme that enhances your design and the color of your poster boards. 4 designs are DUE WEDNESDAY 8/20.
Wednesday 8/20/08
Artist Quote Discussion
Share with the group, your opinion of what the artists quote could mean. In your sketchbook next to the quote, write down any additional thoughts you might have in regards to the quote’s meaning. Be prepared to share with the class.
Critique Group Directions-Wednesday 8/20/08

4) Share with the group your color scheme ideas and the color of your poster board. Write down some of the feedback from your group.
5) With the help of your group, select the overall most successful design out of the 4? Star it.
6) Do you agree with the group’s decision on your most successful design? Why or why not?
7) With the help of your group, answer how your final design could be made stronger and more effective as a final work of art, include ideas about color?
After the group assignment, students will independently re-work the best design in a 10x10 inch box. (Use classroom paper). This could be that you will combine ideas from the 4 designs, make the design/fonts larger or smaller, neater, changing the direction, balancing the space better, changing the font, thickness of the letters, etc. You MUST ACCURATELY DRAW THE 10X10 BOX, AND USE DRAWING TOOLS TO MAKE SURE EDGES ARE STRAIGHT AND EVEN. YOU MAY TRACE CURVED OBJECTS TO HELP YOU WITH THE CURVES OR MAKE SURE THEY ARE NEATLY DRAWN. You should NOT color in your work. However, make a note as to what color scheme you are going to use. FINAL 10x10 DESIGN (uncolored) is DUE FRIDAY 8/22.
Friday 8/22/08
Final design must be ready to be transferred when you come to class. Upon approval, students will trace their design onto vellum paper. There will be a handout and demo on color pencil techniques (shading, crosshatching, & burnishing), and value today. Students will then practice color pencil techniques in a sketchbook. They will draw a sphere, cone, and cylinder and shade them using one of the techniques. The forms must show 3-dimensionality through the use of shading according to a lightsource in the upper left corner. Students must show an even and neat transition of light to dark values that illustrate a consistent light source. Upon approval, students may start color pencil application on their final vellum drawings. Students may want to practice color pencil on their 10x10 in. drawings before going on to the vellum. Fully colored vellum drawings DUE FRIDAY 8/29/08
Monday 8/25
-Review color pencil technique: crosshatching, shading according to a light source
-Students must finish shading the 3 shapes (cone, sphere, cylinder) in their sketchbooks. Shading was approved by teacher before moving on.
-All transferring of images onto vellum must be completed.
