Advanced Placement & Pre-AP Studio Art: 3D

Course Description:

AP Studio Art            Grades 10-12            1 Year Course

Pre-Requisites:  Grade B or better in one other art course or successful portfolio review and teacher approval required.  AP Studio Art students are required to pay a $50 art fee, the AP exam fee, and purchase supplies needed for art assignments completed at home.  Assistance for fees is available upon request.

This course is an advanced level course and is designed for highly motivated high school students who are seriously interested in the study of art at the college level.  A high level of effort is expected and students will need to work diligently both inside and outside of the classroom. The course is based on suggested Advanced Placement guidelines from the national College Board Association.  Emphasis is placed on direct observation, application of design elements and principles, and the development of a body of work that is based on student choice. The focus of the course is to build a 3-Dimensional Design portfolio of work which demonstrates breadth, concentration, and quality. This portfolio will be submitted in May to the College Board for review and assessment.  AP credit will be awarded once the AP Portfolio has been submitted to the College Board.  Students who successfully complete the requirements can request credit from the college or university they will attend.

Course Overview

The 3-D Design portfolio “is intended to address a broad interpretation of sculptural issues. Design involves purposeful decision-making about using the elements and principles of art in an integrative way. In the 3-D Design Portfolio, students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of design principles as they relate to depth and space. The principles of design (unity/variety, balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, repetition, proportion/scale, and figure/ground relationship) can be articulated through the visual elements (mass, volume, color/light, form, plane, line, texture). For this portfolio, students are asked to demonstrate mastery of 3-D design through any three-dimensional approach, including, but not limited to, figurative or nonfigurative sculpture, architectural models, metal work, ceramics, and three-dimensional fiber arts.”  (The College Board).
