Game of the week: City Planning The purpose of this game to to articulate why aggression causes disharmony in a pretend city and in our real lives. Create teams of up to 6 people. Each team gets several index cards with various words on them, including things you would find in a city like libraries, parks, schools, etc. Also include index cards with emotional context words, such as fight/cooperate, kindness/intolerance, joy/sadness. Be sure to include lots of aggression words and their opposites! Each group can request additional cards with anything they like on them, such as more museum cards or an extra card for hovercrafts or spaceships. Groups should also have plenty of index cards to create roads, fields, or any other city features that they can think of. Allow time for each team to design their city, and instruct them that they can choose to include or exclude any cards they wish. When everyone is done, teams take turns explaining why the city is laid out in that particular way; why certain buildings are next to one another or why there are five libraries and no prisons. And also explain why certain things (or words) were NOT included in the city. After this is done, compare the city to the individual lives of the participants. Do we want things like anger or fighting in our cities? Do we want peace and cooperation? Riddle of the week What turns everything around but does not move? A mirror. Highlight the above line to reveal the answer. |
