The kids at Homeschool Out of the Box,
secular co-op in Norfolk, VA, jumped into Art History with both feet. They learned about seven art periods: pre-historic, ancient, medieval, renaissance, neo-classical, romantic, and modern. As a class, they re-created daVinci's The Last Supper in three different styles: medieval, renaissance, and modern. They wrote and acted out three skits that illustrate the major theme of these periods. All this was combined to create their final multi-media presentation. Each student picked a theme and selected examples of their theme from different art periods. Over the course of the semester, they researched their examples to find the interesting factoids, curious origins, and weird mysteries that often surround great works of art. Students also drilled art ID's with these classic examples. Students memorized almost all the examples! Participants created beautiful displays about their themes. One student even generated the content for her own web-page, and several students made their own pre-historic rock art. |
