Ms. Melina's oBX Classes

The Constitution We Wrote

CONSTITUTION OF HSOBX

We, the students of HSoBX, in order to form a more perfect co-op, establish justice, ensure peace among students, provide for the common education, promote the welfare, and secure for ourselves and our families the blessings of liberty and learning, do hereby ordain and establish this Constitution for Homeschool Out of the Box.

Section One: Administrative system, and feedback to such

  1. HSoBX shall have a President or an administrative body which is responsible for student-teacher communication; organization of registration, classes, etc; answering questions; ensuring that teachers are paid; etc.
  2. HSoBX shall have a council made up of students thirteen years of age or older who have been a part of HSoBX for a period of at least one year, or two semesters. Said council shall be responsible for communicating and interacting with the administration on behalf of the general student body.
  3. A system by which students and parents may anonymously provide feedback about teachers, classes, etc, to the administration shall be provided.

Section Two: Classes

  1. There shall be no class forced upon any student, whether by parent, teacher, or administrator.
  2. In all classes, regardless of age or subject matter, the ratio of students to teachers shall be low: no class shall exceed twelve students in number, unless specified otherwise by the administration.

Section Three: Students

  1. All students, regardless of age, shall be required to show proper respect for teachers, classmates, and all other members of oBX, both within the classroom and without.
  2. The maturity level of individual students shall be honored, therefore classes shall not solely be divided based on age, but also by maturity and study level of the student(s) in question.
  3. With proper parental permission, and notification of the teacher at least one week in advance, students may be allowed to miss class on any given day. In the event of illness, advance notification is not required, but the teacher must still be informed at some point.

Section Four: Teachers

  1. Teachers shall do all that is within their power to make classes as interesting and enjoyable as possible for their students.
  2. Teachers shall do also all that is within their power to honor each student’s individuality, while paying equal attention to all and not playing favorites.
Section Five: Environment, social time, dress code, UCN
  1. HSoBX shall provide, at all times, a safe environment for all its members.
  2. A nursery area and supervisor(s) shall be provided for children too young to take part in the classes.
  3. Adequate time shall be provided for social pursuits as well as academic, for students, parents, and teachers alike: a period devoted to lunch shall be guaranteed, and on days when a special activity occurs, classes shall be dismissed early as necessary.
  4. Older students shall enjoy some degree of protection from younger students, and vice versa, especially siblings, so that precious social time need not be disturbed.
  5. HSoBX shall have no dress code, thus allowing its members free expression of themselves. However, if at any time the administration deems that a dress code is necessary, one may then be instated, but it shall not be overly strict.
  6. All members and visitors of HSoBX shall be required to respect the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, and all its property, at all times.
