Awards ~

  • The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18 by the The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).
           
  • The Caldecott Medal honors the best children's picture book of the year.  It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA.
          
  • In 1987, the Commonwealth Foundation established the Commonwealth Writers' Prize to award and encourage literary talent in the British Commonwealth.
            
  • The Edgar Allen Poe Awards, or the "Edgars" as they are more commonly referred to, are presented annually in the spring by the Crime Writers of America in order to recognize distinguished contributions in various categories of crime fiction.
        
  • Mystery Ink's Gumshoe Awards, presented annually since 2002, are given each year to recognize the best achievements in the world of crime fiction.
        
  • The Science Fiction Achievement Award, also known as the Hugo Award was initiated by World Science Fiction Convention and named for Hugo Gernsback, the "founder" of the genre. 
        
  • The Man Booker International Prize is awarded every two years to a living author who has published a work of fiction in the English language.
       
  • Minnesota Book Awards
    Books created by writers, illustrators or book artists who are Minnesotans are eligible for Minnesota Book Awards.   The Awards are given each year for books published in the previous year. 
             
  • One of the nation's most prestigious literary prizes, the National Book Award is given by the National Book Foundation.
            
  • The National Book Critics Circle Award annually recognizes books in five categories:  fiction, general nonfiction, biography / autobiography, poetry and criticism.
           
  • The Nebula Award is presented annually in June by the Science Fiction Writers of America for an outstanding Science Fiction novel.

  • Swedish engineer Alfred Nobel provided for the establishment of the Nobel Foundation. Since 1901, it has recognized achievement in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace and economics.
           
  • The PEN/Faulkner Award is affiliated with PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists) and is named for William Faulker. The award recognizes an outstanding fiction book selected by judges who are themselves fiction writers.
         
  • The will of Joseph Pulitzer provided for the establishment of the Pulitzer Prizes. Since 1917, the prizes have recognized the best in journalism, letters, drama and music. Many consider it the most prestigious award a journalist or author can achieve.
