Rangeland Center in the State Code!

posted Mar 6, 2012 9:59 AM by Range Center Interns

In September, Senator Bert Brackett described a bill he was planning to introduce that would put the Rangeland Center in the state code and make it an officially recognized entity at the University of Idaho. This bill unanimously passed the Idaho Senate on Tuesday Feb. 22. The next step will be for a vote on the bill in the House Resources and Conservation committee and then it will go to the floor of the House.  If all goes well, the Rangeland Center Bill will be passed and the U of I Rangeland Center will be solidified in Idaho Code as an official state entity by the end of the 2012 legislative session. As the administration and organization of our University changes, the Rangeland Center will stay put!

Rangeland Center Interns Celebrated in Alumni Newsletter

posted Mar 6, 2012 9:33 AM by Range Center Interns

This new school-year marked the beginning of not only a newly launched Rangeland Center, but also a whole new program for students in rangeland. The Rangeland Center Internship Program was launched where students majoring in range could be hired as paid interns. The interns do everything from providing outreach to high schools to help coordinating events related to range. The five current range interns are: Allison Flora, Brianne Lind, Brooke Jacobson, Justin Olnes, and Connor White.

On March 14th, the U-Idaho Rangeland Center took another step forward by submitting an "Entity Plan" to the UI Vice President for Research.  We will hear back within a few weeks of our proposed plan was successful and how close we are to being named a "Center."  The way ahead looks bright and clear!

A Formal Proposal

posted Oct 30, 2010 3:30 PM by Karen Launchbaugh

On Friday, October 29th, we submitted a written proposal the UI Vice President of Research and the UI Deans for distinction as the UI Rangeland Center.  The path is clear and we are headed with a steady pace down that path. We now have 23 faculty and staff who would like to be part of the Rangeland Center. Next steps include getting input and support of our stakeholders and partners in Idaho.

Oh yes, we still need to write a business plan and a strategic plan.

Formal recognition of the UI Rangeland Center is expected in Spring 2011.  Thanks for all your support.

Firming up A Mission

posted Sep 28, 2010 6:26 AM by Karen Launchbaugh

On Friday, Sept 16 a meeting of major stakeholders was held in Boise, Idaho in cooperation with the Idaho Rangeland Resources Commission Meeting.  We had about 30 participants and the meeting was a great success.

Based on this meeting we added one goal to our list of goals for the Rangeland Center. We will conduct conduct research, provide information, and create learning opportunities. However, based on input at our meeting we will also try to facilitate collaborative rangeland projects and activities among agencies and organizations.

Last Friday, we met with the Deans of the College of Natural Resources (CNR) and College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and the Director of University of Idaho Extension. Everything is continuing to move forward quickly under their supportive guidance. Our next step is to meet with key stakeholder groups at the next Idaho Rangeland Resource Commission board meeting on Sept. 17th in Boise.

Continued Progress

The enthusiasm for a Rangeland Center at the University of Idaho continues to grow.  The researchers and teachers dedicated to rangelands at the University of Idaho are coming together. We have a start of strategic plan. We even have a "working mission"

-- The Rangeland Center empowers researchers and teachers at the University of Idaho to strive to create insight and foster understanding for the stewardship of rangelands. Our innovative design promotes active partnerships with individuals, organizations, and communities who work and live on these vast landscapes. We focus research and education to produce solutions that are responsive and relevant to contemporary rangeland issues.

This week (Sept 3) we meet with the Dean of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean of Natural Resources, and the Director of Extension to share our plans. We look forward to their insight.

Stay tuned, Karen

In the beginning...

A rangeland program has existed at the University of Idaho for more than 50 years. However, college changes removed the Rangeland Ecology and Management Department from the books in spring 2010. Out of the ashes rises the opportunity to create a Center for Rangeland Studies (specific name to be determined). Stay tuned for updates and opportunities.
