Mahabalipuram

(மகாபலிபுரம்)

TamilNadu, India

Mahabalipuram is a small port town on the North East coast of TamilNadu. It houses many historical sites and is constantly visited by tourists. It was the most tourists I have seen in India, but then again it is one of the few touristy places I've visited.                                   Our guide for the day told us of his day with the Tsunami in 2004. He was having his morning tea when it struck and he ran for his life. Speaking of the Tsunami, the photo on the right is of an excavation found after the coming of the wave. The orange tarp houses the remains of the 7th Century, unearthed (or un-oceaned?) by the Tsunami.                       Mahabalipuram is also home to the Shore Temple, pictured on the left. Unlike most other historical sites, one can freely walk in here as they wish. While, there is an entrance fee, it did not feel touristy. This temple was rebuilt stone by stone after a cyclone had washed it away.  This small town is most well know for its beach resort, an escape from the busy city life.  There is nothing special about the beach here, same water, same sand, but it's different. In one of the restaurants, my grandma and I met this group of students from all over the world who were volunteerng their time there. It was nice to meet such idealistic youth. For your enjoyment, my feet in the ocean:
