May/June Highlights 2012

The month of May brings many exciting adventures for our children. The first couple of weeks of May we will be learning about flowers.  We will be discussing how flowers grow, the different parts of the flower, the many different kinds of flowers and more.

This brings us to a very special day we celebrate in May:  Mother’s Day!  Not only will we be making something extra special for our moms for Mother’s Day, but we will also discussing how extraordinary our mothers, grandmothers and aunts are and all of the wonderful things they do for us every day.

The children will also be little “gardeners” by planting their very own bean plant.  We will be observing how quickly they grow, discussing the progress from a tiny seed and comparing and contrasting several different types of seeds, as well.  Another exciting event which will take place this month is the arrival of our caterpillars (soon-to-be butterflies).  We will be able to watch as the caterpillars eat, grow larger, eventually forming their chrysalises and developing into butterflies!  Once they hatch, we will witness them eating with their very long tongues and, when the time is right, we will set them free right in our own playground!  It’s such a thrill for the children!  We will be talking about other bugs, as well as caterpillars and butterflies.

Towards the end of May we will be talking about pond life and all the different animals you might find living in the pond.  So the month of May is chock full of all sorts of animal and plant life. This ties our final class trip in nicely to our curriculum for this month.  On Wednesday, May 23rd, both three-year-old classes will be taking a bus to the Wyckoff Wildlife Center in Wyckoff.  We will have the opportunity to take a nature hike along their nature trail, observe the different animals inside and outside and engage in an up-front viewing of several animals that live at the wildlife center while the children sit in a large circle inside. Once again, this trip will require chaperones.  Veronica Siller will let you know if you will be needed.  Permission slips will be going out shortly.

To all the loving, caring and sweet mothers, grandmothers and aunts:  I wish you all a peaceful and happy mother’s day!  You truly deserve it!  Your dedication and devotion to your children shines through!

Happy Mother’s Day!
