RECIPES
PLAYDOUGH (Not for eating, of course!)
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. oil (vegetable)
1 cup water
Food coloring
Put flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil and water in a pot on stove and stir. Heat on medium heat. Add food coloring. Stir constantly. When dough starts to thicken, turn down to low. Take out of pot when dough forms a ball. turn onto wax paper and knead. Store in tight container.
GOOP (As the name should imply, this is not for eating either!)
Elmer's Glue
Liquid starch
Food coloring
Bowl
Combine 1/2 cup Elmer's glue, two tablespoons liquid starch and 5 drops of food coloring. Vigorously mix the ingredients with a fork as if you were making scrambled eggs. After a few minutes, the solution will become stringy. Continue to mix with a fork or knead with hands to make putty. If it feels sticky, add more starch, if it feels slimy, add more glue. When you reach the right consistency, all the material comes off your hands into a ball. Pull it apart, put back together or use it to make shapes. Store in the refrigerator in plastic bag.

On the back of a crocodile.

MEATBALL
On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table, and onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled right out the door.
It rolled down the sidewalk
And under a bush
And then my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush!
So if you like spaghetti
All covered with cheese
Hold on to your meatball
And don't ever sneeze!

JUST PLAYING
When I'm building in the block room,
Please don't say I'm "just playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play,
About balance and shapes.
When I'm getting all dressed up,
Setting the table, caring for the babies,
Don't get the idea I'm "just playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I mabe a mother or father someday.
When you see me up to my elbows in paint,
Or standing at an easel, or molding and shaping clay,
Please don't let me hear you say "he's just playing."
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm expressing myself and being creative.
I may be an artist or an inventor someday.
When you see me sitting in a chair
"Reading" to an imaginary audience,
Please don't laugh and think I'm "just playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I may be a teacher some day.
When you see me combing the bushes for bugs,
Or packing my pockets with choice things I find,
Don't pass it off as "just playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I may be a scientist someday.
When you see me engrossed in a puzzle,
Or some "plaything" at my schoool,
Please don't feel the time is wasted in "play."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning to solve problems and concentrate.
I may be in business some day.
When you see me cooking or tasting foods,
Please don't think that because I enjoy it, it is just "play."
I'm learning to follow directions and see differences.
I may be a chef someday.
When you see me learning to skip, hop, run and move my body,
Please don't say I'm "just playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning how my body workds.
I may be a doctor, nurse or athlete someday.
When you ask me what I've done at school today,
And I say, "I've played."
Please don't misunderstand me.
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning to enjoy and be successful in work.
I'm preparing for tomorrow.
Today, I'm a child and my work is play.
