Dozer on a flatcar in swampy track
I often have my HO scale modules set up in a spare room. The late afternoon sun often shines directly on the modules, giving opportunities for sunlit photos. The models are actually On30, which is O scale that can run on HO scale track. The dozer is a diecast John Deere model that I weathered. With the camera on a tripod, and using a close focusing zoom lens (Tamron 18-200mm), this was a great time to grab this shot. Note the white cardboard reflector to the right of the camera, filling in the dark shadows in front of the dozer. This area would have been mostly black without the reflector. The white reflector does not overpower the sunlight, it just lightens the shadows.
The loco is a Bachmann On30 diesel mechanical model, with a Backwoods Miniatures detailing kit added and plenty of weathering.
Lumber company locomotive roster shot
For this roster shot of the logging company locomotives, they were all positioned on the HO scale modules with the main light coming mostly from behind. Of course this would make the viewing sides in the shadows, so a foil covered piece of cardboard as a reflector was used to shine some light into the shadows. It was hand held as can be seen in this shot. This not a "normal" model photo, as it was taken from above. It was the only way to show all of the models at once, so this method was used. The Tamron 18-200mm zoom lens was used.
