On these pages I am going to show how I've taken some of my favorite photos. While I doubt many others will be able to (or want to) copy exactly what I've done, these samples may hopefully serve as inspirations!
Diesel framed with two snowplows
The original photo that won First Place in Model Railroader's Annual Photo Contest in March of 1989 was a color slide. Recently I tried to duplicate the scene using a digital camera. The original was taken with a wide angle lens with a custom pinhole aperture, for the great depth of focus. This lens does not work the same with my digital SLR camera, so I needed to do it differently. I used a Tamron 11-18mm extreme wide angle lens at 11mm that focuses fairly close. I needed to have the lens back and inch or so from the plows to achieve acceptable focus in the near foreground, and by using the smallest aperture f/22 the rest of the scene was in focus,
This is the digital version.
The digital image needed to be cropped to resemble the orginal color slide. All posed on my original shelf layout, which has had all of its structures removed.
Train on a trestle at dusk
This silhouette of a steam train on a trestle was also an Honorable Mention winner in Model Railroader's Annual Photo Contest (March 1987), and was on the cover of the issue too. A real simple setup - the wood trestle had "scenery" in front of it made from cardboard (I used red because I had it on hand, the color didn't matter), with a sky backdrop in behind. The sky was lighted with a single bulb placed below the card table. Smoke from the steam engine was simulated with some cotten batten.
