Use our Alpha Track Radon Test Kit to test for radon levels in your
home. Flexible testing period allows you to test for anywhere from 14
days up to one year. Radon levels vary in response to daily and
seasonal changes in weather patterns and ventilation patterns, so the
longer the testing period, the more closely your test result will
reflect the yearly average radon level in your home.
How it Works:
Alpha Track technology uses a small piece of special plastic or film as
the detector. Air from the room where the test is conducted passes
through a filter covering a hole in the container. When alpha particles
from Radon gas strike the detector, they leave damage tracks which are
visible to the human eye when treated and examined under a microscope
or with an optical reader. The radon level is calculated by counting
the number of strikes per surface area of the detector.
Advantages:
- Flexible testing period from 14 days to one year. The kit is most accurate when exposed for a minimum of 90 days.
- Detector is not affected by humidity or temperature.
Disadvantages:
- Minimum testing period is 14 days, with the most accurate results when exposed for a minimum of 90 days.
- Precision is limited in areas of very low radon concentration or short exposure time (less than 14 days).
How to use the kit:
1. Alpha Track detector should be deployed on the lowest lived in area
of your home, such as a family room or basement recreation room.
- Do:
Put a detector in a room where you and your family spend a lot of time.
Put a detector in a finished basement space, especially in a basement
bedroom or space that children frequently occupy.
Make sure the detector is at least 20” above the ground, but not more
than 6’ (in the general breathing zone for most children and adults as
they are sitting or standing).
Record the start and end dates on the detector.
Mail immediately upon completion of the test in the postage paid return mailer.
- Don’t:
Put a detector in a kitchen (unless you're testing granite countertops), bathroom or hallway.
Place in a closet, cupboard, sump or crawl space.
2. Record the start date on the detector. The alpha track detector
should be deployed for a minimum of 14 days, up to a maximum of one
year.
3. At the end of your testing period, record the end date on the
detector, and mail immediately in the postage paid return mailer.
Results will be available within 2 weeks on our website and by return
mail. Complete Printable Instructions
