History
The Radiofreetunes internet radio stations were founded in December of 2003 on mp3.com. Taking the advice of artist manager Joni Foraker and an article on internet radio in the Indie Music Bible we launched stations RadioFreetunes, Radio Free Pittsburgh, Debut Electronica, and Debut Alternative to promote the music of indie artists. Musician BJ Colins played a key role in introducing us to indie musician around the world through the indiehangout and funender forums. Adrian McCoy of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, The Tribune Review, and Pittsburgh Magazine published stories about Radio Free Pittsburgh. Those stories brought more bands and fans to RadiofreePittsburgh. A record label affiliated company Vivendi/Universal bought mp3.com shut it down.
We moved our stations and artist pages to Artistlaunch.com when mp3.com closed. Paul Dos Santos helped us launch the Radiofreetunes.com site and created the radio and podcast facilities of Artistlaunch. While at Artistlaunch Radiofreetunes served as the music director of the syndicated broadcast radio show and podcast the Artistlaunch Hour. Radio Free tunes also served as a Featured artist editor and talent recruiter. Working with Paul Laginess, Paul Dos Santos, Remy Lambert, Padda, and others at Artistlaunch we promoted indie artists and attracted some major talents to the site. With the help of the Indie Music Bible,Miles High Productions, Art Attack Promotions, Engine Company Records, Ariel Hyatt Publicity, and others we promoted the new releases of George Benson, The Los Lonely Boys, Andre Crouch, Boney James, Take 6, Chris Hillman, Louden Wainright III, Thelma Houston, Leslie Gore, Mason Williams, John Popper, Sally Taylor, Jen Chapin, Jesse Malin and more.
Using the facilities of Aritstlaunch.com we launched several Radiofreetunes podcast series on iTunes including Radio Free Christmas which stayed in the top 100 podcasts on iTunes during December 2006.
The Radiofreetunes stations moved to Last.fm when Artistlaunch was sold and the station facilities were turned off. The Radiofreetunes label hosted the music of Ann Wilson of Heart, Pure Reason Revolution, Enigma, Paul Schwartz, and more. After being purchased by a record label (CBS) Last.fm in 2009 turned off it's embedded music players and disabled the label playlist function. In October 2009 the hosting site Geocities closed and the Radiofreetunes.com site when down. But we continued with our Myspace page.
In March 2010 Radiofreetunes.com is reborn on a new host site with youtube video channels and playlists from soundclick.com and playlist.com.
Despite all of the attempts by the major labels to buy up and shut down sites that promote independent music, we continue in our efforts to bring you great new music.
