The following is a rundown of my quickly jotted down notes from Hugh Hewitt's address at the CAP, www.azpolicy.org, dinner Tuesday, November 12, 2008.  Tweets if I felt I could do it and pay attention.
  • we will get another chance, but we CAN NOT punt it away
  • the base came out, it wasn't lost. the center wasn't there.
    • youth
    • latinos
    • blacks / African Americans
      • didn't go into detail because was to be expected, like HH voting for someone he feels somehow intimately connected to through any number of reasons [like that person is from Ohio]
      • no qualms about it - ok with it.
    • women
      • 56% went for Obama
  • the economic crisis was/is bad but Hugh Hewitt said it wasn't what lost these demographics
    • by time of crisis, most of their minds were made up.  it didn't change.  already committed.
  • mentioned Millennial Makeover
  • youth are uniquely tech connected - and they "...don't use vowels" -a joke that caused laughter
  • we didn't win tech campaign
    • HH said we ruled tech 4 yrs ago. bunny trail: personally would like to see sources/evidence of that.
    • bunny trail: Hugh should be getting in touch with @DavidAll
  • need to address latino demographic - critical [as are others, but you won't get anywhere with out getting latinos on board]
    • thought of the GOP as anti-latino runs deep
    • vital to have GOP [foothold]-[?]
    • need to make sure shape debate that is not identity debate but security debate when we talk about the border issues
      • bunny trail: Medved said Conservatives should have heavy hand in debate and framing of any legislation and should call it "Earned Citizenship".  As Frank Luntz says, words matter.
  • women vote - reason why lost this group of voters
    • mentioned an article that said soccer moms became security moms for 2004 election.  not sure if it's the Time article or the countless other things that have that phrase in it.
    • we won the war in the minds of moms.
      • this goes into messaging.
      • surge worked, took issue off of the front page
      • the war and our security need to have front seating again
        • mentioned American Lion - can't remember if it was in the context of women and war or next topic: communication.
  • we aren't communicating well
    • HH said he was talking to Jon Kyle earlier about the need to over communicate.
      • think you sold it after 4 times? say it another 30 times.
  • Republicans never think of the need for speed - this is not good.
    • joked that he was still waiting for the GOP to start their 2008 process.
    • we need to get out there fast and get into the thick of it quickly
    • Rep. and GOP need to tap into the "network" in place. unfortunately the "network" has been overlooked and frayed. What is the "network"?  YOU!  HH sees a breath of life in this "network".  Everything, the neglect to the current outcomes, has invigorated this "network".
  • going to be 4 bumpy years.
  • things to do / issues:
    • money - need more of it.
      • Mother Teresa story - Reagan gave her a medal, asked if she had anything to say, said yes, gave her the mic and she said, "I need more money."
      • that which is rewarded gets repeated
        • drew comparison of AZ Prop 102 - want to see more of that?  got to give financial support for that to happen.
      • Obama's contributions - something like 3.1 million donated
        • we need to meet and exceed that.
      • donate right now to the big three:
        • NRSC
          • if nothing else, this should be top priority.  imperative.  with state of race now and need of larger firewall in 2010.
        • NRCC
        • NRC
      • said "out of defeat comes victory coalition" - noting possibility by referencing AZ and it's battle to define marriage.
    • national security
      • it's our issue
      • but we shudder to think of it resurfacing.
      • we don't want it to be
      • scary to think in such terms
    • energy
      • we have to go get it and keep it.  period.  end of issue.
      • bunny trail: personal shout out to #dontgo
        • it's igniting to something more that what it started out as.
    • schools
      • have failed the American people
      • we need to change the system from the top to bottom
      • we need to save another generation
    • leadership
      • we need to see humility.
        • alluded to a sign on Reagan's desk
          • "There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit."
      • servant leadership
        • not looking for the credit
        • said he got e-mails from someone inside CAP explaining everything Cathi Herrod did for Prop 102 - but you wouldn't know it if someone didn't say it.
  • new faces / new blood
    • to be honest, forgot why i jotted that down.
  • we need to be rooted in liberty, freedom, [?]-[divine plan]-[?]-[missed it.]
  • we should make it be as good as the framers wanted it to be.
  • Good night!
See tweets from earlier in the night before Hugh Hewitt's presentation @radioaction.

A couple of pictures at twitpic of the end of the night.

A couple of videos at 12seconds.tv of the end of the night.

And just a side note:
Arizona is one big speed trap.  They have photo radar state wide, first in the nation, just to collect money.  Driving education is poor in state but instead of educating, they erect photo radar to collect more money to pay for things Arizona people don't want or need.  Just a little peeved.  They have a stretch of highway that has you going 65 mph for 7-8+ miles, then something like half a mile or so from pic boxes it drops to 55.  Honestly missed the sign where ever it's obscure location is and pretty sure I got flashed.  It's a speed trap. You miss the 10 mph drop and you are flashed.  Boo.
