Audio recording from David Harvey's class on Marx's Capital in which he draws on the example of the New York fiscal crisis of the 1970s and the emergence of a neo-liberal agenda in relation to the current crisis. Predicts consolidation in the financial sector under the aegis of increasingly empowered central banks - "financial state monopoly capitalism" along with a further bolstering of class power, and an accompanying legitimation crisis. The major part of the talk consists in a discussion of the conditions of capitalist reproduction.

COMMENT FROM CAITLIN MANNING

Harvey is the most satisfying, because he gives a solid background, clearly articulated, for understanding the complex interacdtion of blockages to the smooth functioning of captialism that cause crises such as the one we have now. It was very helpful analysis and it was great to be able to hear it on audio. But he is basically an academic, and does not seem to be too interested in what the possibilities are for response to this moment. Or rather, he sees this as quite simply, another step in the centralization of capital with not much response possible from the people whose lives are being ruined by it.
