General Resident Director Job Description

The responsibilities of the Resident Director are numerous and varied. The following is a representative, but not all-inclusive, list of RD responsibilities.  The RD reports directly to the Area Director of the quad.

1.       Maintains a professional attitude and manner while serving as a Radford University employee and representative. Serves as a role model for students.

2.       Supports the academic mission of the University through the presentation of academic support programs and active intervention with residents experiencing academic difficulties.

3.       Knows and understands the operation of the University and its services.

4.       Supervises and evaluates a Resident Assistant staff of between 4 and 8 members.

5.       Becomes acquainted with each student living in the residence hall as quickly as possible.

6.       Assists students with their personal and group concerns, especially in terms of interpersonal concerns, within the limits of his/her training and capability. Refers students as needed.

7.       Facilitates student engagement in learning and community development through a programming model that offers a variety of activities and opportunities to residents.

8.       Serves duty nights on weekdays and weekends as scheduled (see FAQs for a detailed description of duty).

9.       Participates in Fall and Spring pre-service training sessions, as well as session spresented throughout the year.

10.   Attends weekly meetings including, but not limited to: one on ones with supervisor and supervisees, committee meetings, quad meetings, building meetings, and an all-staff meeting as scheduled by Residential Life.

11.   Assists in maintaining order in emergency situations.

12.   Completes administrative and clerical tasks such as roster verification, fire safety building inspections, and key audits, assigned by the Area Director and/or the Office of Housing and Residential Life.

13.   Informs the Area Director of all situations through informal visits, conferences, and meetings.

14.   Helps educate staff and students on how to submit maintenance/housekeeping requests. Monitors the timeliness of work requests and the general condition of the public residence hall areas.

15.   Oversees and follows up on the handling of large scale facilities issues.

16.   Knows, understands, and supports the rationale for University and residence hall policies and procedures and is able to explain, interpret, and enforce them effectively. Abides by all policies.

17.   Serves as the initial administrator, investigator, and conduct case officer for the University conduct system for violations of University policy occurring within the residence hall

Compensation:

Resident Directors receive a compensation package valued at more than $16,000 for 9 months of work.
  • All tuition and fees (except fees related to specific programs of study).
  • Furnished one-bedroom apartment in assigned hall, including all utilities and local telephone service.  Apartments can accommodate Resident Directors who are single or married.
  • Flex meal plan (Provides students with a designated amount of Flex Dollars and Vending Money).
  • $618 per month monetary stipend for nine months. - Tuition, room & board are considered taxable income by the state of VA. Therefore, the net stipend RDs will receive depends on each individual’s tuition, room & board expenses.
