Harsh's Open Source Log

Harsh J - My Thoughts (and Code) With My Keyboard!

Open Source Contribution Log:

  1. First ever patch was to python-twitter library. Amateurish hunt and fix for selfish needs at that time.
  2. Began the 'Fresco' Image Effects project. Ended after a year due to lack of interest and guiding members. Also, the name was copyrighted by another FOSS project.
  3. Wrote some pretty wild code to compute an average color from an icon in order for KDE-Powered Smooth Tasks's lights feature to color based on the application's icon. The patch has since been bettered by the original author, but this sparked an interest in KDE and C++ within.
  4. Wrote a Comic Book Thumbnailing add-on for the K Desktop Environment (KDE) project and was granted one of its developer accounts to maintain it and to help with other bug-work, which I performed with good interest for a time.
  5. Tried to reboot the 'Fresco' project with a new name, but failed again. Having found the underrated KDE's showFoto to do very similar things, I've given up on the pursuance.
  6. Working with Apache's Avro Project (Then a Hadoop sub-project) as part of some research work at Ericsson led to fixing a minor issue with its Apache Hadoop Map/Reduce extensions.
  7. Continuous work on Apache Hadoop at Ericsson led to personal interest in the project. Patches, issue reports, and a lot of mails in mailing lists followed.
  8. Focus shifted from the base Map/Reduce to Apache HBase, the BigTable vision of Hadoop, after reading some success stories of StumbleUpon and Facebook. Contributions followed in forms of improvements to imports. Fast community.

List of code published here:

  • Listen Music Player-XChat Plugin - [Download] (0.5 KB)
    • Wrote this simple, silly thing when I liked using the Listen player for GNOME.
    • Displays the song status in XChat if you supply it a command.
  • Yahoo Smilies for GNOME v0.1 - [Download] (2.2 KB)
    • There was this (now seemingly silly) project of using smilies on message boards via a desktop application, started by a member 'Gigacore' of ThinkDigit forums. It was .NET based and (sorta) Windows-only.
    • I wrote this for learning PyGTK at the while, giving up after I'd accomplished the goal. Unusable right now, just as how useless PyGTK's experience was to me.
  • Tinge color scheme for gEdit v1.0 - [Download] (5.7 KB)
    • A colorful, dark syntax highlight scheme for gEdit. Designed with Python users in mind, so excuse me if your language does not look great on it.
  • MPC Notifier Script v1.0 - [Download] (1.1 KB)
    • There was a time when I went minimalistic, and this was the outcome. A simple notifier script I could bind to my keyboard keys and let myself know what has changed upon next/prev/pause/play.
  • XTwitter XChat Plugin v0.1 - [Download] (1.1 KB)
    • A (now unusable) twitter plugin for XChat so you can go boom with IRC + Twitter.
    • Alas, Twitter was practically stupid to use and I had to leave it. So was FaceBook.

More to come, soon.
