Definition Robot Training - Testing File Definitions

Making sure it worked

After you add files to QVR's definitions, it is vitally important that you test the definitions and make sure they do not give false positives or delete files that Windows needs to run properly. Thankfully, there is a way within QVR to run a scan without actually quarantining anything, but instead simply creating a log file. Just right-click on the Remove Threats button, and a scan will begin. No files will be quarantined, and you can then look over the log file to make sure your definition additions don't pick up any legitimate files.

What if 'tis broke't?

No need to panic. Just go in to the definitions file manually (open it in Notepad) and remove the two lines for the file that shouldn't be in there.

OK, how do I do that?

The file definitions are formatted in a simple but intuitive way. The entire file is split into two-line groups. The first line of each two-line group is the name of the virus which the file belongs to, and the second line is the path and filename of the virus file. To remove a file, just find it in the definitions and remove its entire line, plus the one above it which gives the file a name.

Rinse and repeat

Now repeat the steps to test your definitions again. Keep doing so until any and all false positives are removed. Then you are ready to move to the next step.
